India are one win away from sealing the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, but the fourth T20I in Hyderabad raises a question beyond the result: will the relaid pitch deliver the more balanced contest Gautam Gambhir called for earlier in the series? The India head coach had stressed the need for better pitches that give bowlers a fair chance, rather than leaving them to contain the damage on batting-friendly surfaces. The fresh surface at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium will put that expectation to the test.

India lead 2-1 after bouncing back from a defeat in the second T20I with a 14-run win in Indore. The West Indies had chased down a target of 250 in the second match, underlining the destructive potential of their batting line-up. India responded with a more effective bowling display in the third game, but the visitors remain capable of turning a contest around in a matter of overs.

The fourth T20I of the five-match series will be played on Tuesday, October 14, with the toss scheduled for 6:30 PM IST. Live streaming of the India vs West Indies T20I series will be available on the JioHotstar app and website, while the matches will be telecast live on the Star Sports Network in India

Hyderabad has traditionally been a high-scoring venue, and the firepower on both sides makes another run-heavy encounter a distinct possibility. However, the recently relaid surface adds uncertainty over how much assistance bowlers might receive. Both teams will need to assess conditions quickly, particularly in the powerplay, where the early overs could shape their approach.

For India, the opportunity is to close out the series; for West Indies, it is a chance to force a decider. Whether the new surface brings bat and ball into a more even contest, as Gambhir wants, or produces another batting-dominated spectacle will be one of the key storylines in Hyderabad.

ATTACK FOR WICKETS

India will look to carry their aggressive approach with the ball into the fourth T20I as they aim to seal the series. Vice-captain Tilak Varma said the team had reviewed its approach after conceding 249 in the second match, when Shai Hope’s century powered West Indies to a memorable chase.

Tilak admitted India had become too defensive as the visitors scored freely, but said head coach Gautam Gambhir had urged the bowlers to attack and create wicket-taking opportunities. India responded with a 14-run win in Indore, though West Indies continued to show their ability to score quickly.

“The West Indies are a really good side, especially in T20 format. They play so much franchise cricket, so they know how to play this format. The power they have is unbelievable,” Tilak said.

With India leading 2-1, their challenge will be to maintain that attacking intent against a line-up capable of changing the game in a matter of overs.

POWERPLAY BATTLE

For West Indies, the opening six overs could prove decisive as they look to level the series. Head coach Darren Sammy identified the powerplay at both ends as an area his side must improve on ahead of the fourth T20I.

Sammy pointed out that India had scored at nearly 14.5 runs per over in the powerplay, leaving West Indies playing catch-up even when they managed to slow the scoring later in the innings. He believes the visitors must make a stronger start with both bat and ball to challenge the hosts.

“To beat India in India, you really have to win both powerplays, with bat and ball,” Sammy said.

On a venue known for high scores, West Indies will need to contain India’s aggressive top order while making the most of their own powerplay opportunities. A better start could keep them in the contest and set up a series decider in the fifth T20I.

PITCH REPORT

Hyderabad’s reputation as a batting-friendly venue points towards the possibility of another high-scoring contest, but the recently relaid surface adds an element of uncertainty. The ground has produced several imposing totals in recent years, and both teams have the firepower to take advantage if conditions favour the batters.

The key question is whether the fresh surface offers bowlers enough assistance to make the contest more even. Dew could also influence conditions later in the evening, potentially making life harder for the bowling side.

HYDERABAD WEATHER FORECAST

The weather in Hyderabad is expected to remain favourable, with no rain forecast during the evening. Temperatures are likely to drop from 30 degrees Celsius at 7 pm to 27 degrees by 10 pm. Skies should be partly cloudy initially before clearing around 9 pm.

Humidity is expected to rise from 53 per cent to 73 per cent as the evening progresses. Wind gusts could reach 30 km/h early on before easing. With rain unlikely to interrupt play, the main weather-related factor could be dew later in the evening, which may make bowling more challenging.

TEAM NEWS AND PREDICTED XIs

India are likely to retain the XI that won in Indore, leaving Vaibhav Sooryavanshi waiting for his opportunity. West Indies batter Amir Jangoo, who impressed during the ODI series, may also have to wait for a chance to break into the T20I side.

The visitors’ bigger concern is Romario Shepherd’s fitness. He sustained an injury while bowling in Ranchi and was subsequently ruled out of the Indore match. His availability for the fourth T20I could affect West Indies’ balance, given his contributions with both bat and ball.

INDIA’S PREDICTED XI: Sanju Samson (WK), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav.

WEST INDIES’ PREDICTED XI: Shai Hope (C/WK), Kamil Pooran, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Quentin Sampson, Keemo Paul, Shamar Springer, Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie.
