He is only 15. He has just had a taste of international cricket. Yet, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi speaks with the self-awareness of a seasoned campaigner when reflecting on a whirlwind four months that have tested his resolve as much as they have catapulted him into the spotlight.
Following a breakout Indian Premier League season with the Rajasthan Royals, the teenage sensation encountered a rare dip in form during an India A tri-series in Sri Lanka. However, he announced his return to rhythm in signature style, exploding with a blistering century against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla. That performance sealed his maiden senior India call-up for the T20I tour of the UK.
Though he sat out the opening two fixtures in Belfast, Sooryavanshi made history at Manchester’s Old Trafford in the second T20I against England, becoming India’s youngest-ever international cricketer at 15 years and 100 days, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing mark.
His initiation to senior international cricket, however, proved unforgiving. Faced with express pace and targeted short-ball tactics from Jofra Archer, Sooryavanshi recorded modest scores of 14, 13, and 15 across three outings. He was subsequently left out of the final T20I in Birmingham as Sanju Samson returned to the XI, with India eventually suffering a 0-4 series defeat.
The decision by the team management to bench the teenage opener after just three innings drew sharp criticism from several former cricketers, who argued for greater patience with a generational talent.
Unfazed by the scrutiny, Sooryavanshi is learning to embrace the fickle nature of elite sport.
“Yes, there have been several ups and downs in the last four months; it’s part of cricket, it will keep happening, but I have to follow the process and give my 100 per cent for the team,” Sooryavanshi said during a training session in Harare.
The left-hander now returns to familiar and fond surroundings as India prepare to face Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series at the Harare Sports Club, starting July 23. It was at this very venue in February 2026 that Sooryavanshi produced one of the most destructive innings in age-group history, hammering an unbeaten 175 off just 80 balls-laced with 15 fours and 15 sixes-against England to power India to their sixth ICC U19 World Cup title.
Accompanied by his parents during the UK tour and continuously guided by a supportive coaching staff, the young opener feels well-equipped mentally and technically for his latest assignment.
“It’s an obvious thing that whatever I want, the coaches are making it available, and whatever practice I require, I am getting that. Feeling very good, there is confidence also,” he added.
MEMORABLE GROUND FOR ME SOORYAVANSHI
Revisiting the scene of his U19 World Cup heroics has provided a timely boost of positive reinforcement.
“It’s a very memorable ground for me. Just four months back, we had played the U-19 World Cup Final and won, so a very special ground. To represent India is everyone’s dream, and it’s a very special moment,” he said.
“I’m playing on a ground where we won the U-19 World Cup four months back and made history, and to return to the ground and play here will be an altogether different feeling… really enjoying it.”
Having already played two matches at the venue during the World Cup, Sooryavanshi plans to leverage his familiarity with the Harare pitch conditions to make a substantial contribution in senior colors.
In Ireland and England, the young crop of Indian batters struggled to adapt to conditions after having played in the subcontinent in the lead-up to the tour.
“The pitches and the conditions here, I’ve got a fair idea about them when I last played here during the U-19 World Cup. So, I will try what all I gathered during that tournament to apply those learnings during the matches now and do well,” he said.
The youngster is likely to get an extended run at the top as India have travelled to Zimbabwe without Sanju Samson. Prabhsimran Singh, the Punjab Kings wicketkeeper-batter, is the reserve opener in the squad.
