DC vs RR: HIGHLIGHTS | SCORECARD
Punjab Kings will be breathing a sigh of relief after Rajasthan Royals suffered a 5-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday, a result that kept their Indian Premier League playoff race alive. Earlier in the day, Punjab Kings had fallen to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Dharamshala, making RR’s collapse a pivotal twist in the qualification equation.
The result leaves RR and DC level on 12 points, with Rajasthan still holding two matches in hand that could take them to 16 and potentially move them beyond PBKS’ reach, who sit on 13 points with one game remaining. Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, have just one league match left, leaving the playoff race finely poised heading into the final stretch.
RR captain Riyan Parag did not hide his disappointment after the defeat, admitting his side had fallen below the standards required for a top-four finish.
“If we keep playing like that, we shouldn’t be in contention of playing top four,” Parag said. “I feel if you want to win a trophy, you have to be better than what we were today. Extremely disappointed. We are pretty better team than what we have shown in the last four or five games.”
STARC HURTS RR’s PLAYOFF RUN
After being asked to bat first, RR suffered an early setback with the dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal, but teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi once again ignited the innings with fearless strokeplay. The 15-year-old was dropped on 35 off just 14 deliveries by Sameer Rizvi, a difficult but costly lapse that immediately shifted pressure back onto the bowling side.
Sooryavanshi capitalised ruthlessly in the same over, smashing 18 runs off debutant Tripurana Vijay before his innings was eventually ended by Madhav Tiwari, who halted RR’s early momentum. From there, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel took charge, with Parag shifting gears aggressively and dismantling Mukesh Kumar for 23 runs in a single over, including three sixes and a boundary.
RR looked firmly placed at 160/2 after 14 overs, but the innings collapsed in dramatic fashion as Mitchell Starc produced a decisive spell that changed the course of the match. Starc removed Parag and two more batters – Donovan Ferreira and Ravi Singh – in a devastating over, triggering a collapse that saw RR lose 6 wickets for just 33 runs in the final six overs despite a fighting half-century from Jurel.
The 36-year-old Australian, Starc was adjudged the player-of-the-match for his fiery spell. He ended the game with figures of 4/40. RR’s late-order implosion ensured that what had been a dominant position quickly turned into a below-par total, giving DC a realistic chase under pressure conditions.
DC BATTING COMES GOOD
Delhi Capitals’ chase began in chaotic fashion as KL Rahul was dropped on zero by Yash Raj Punja, a missed chance that proved costly as DC quickly surged to 72 without losing a wicket in the powerplay.
While Rahul settled into rhythm with his trademark mix of controlled aggression and singles, while his opening partner attacked from the outset to keep the scoreboard moving. Abhishek Porel anchored the innings with a fluent half-century, helping DC build a commanding 105-run opening stand before his dismissal.
Rahul went on to register a composed fifty of his own, his fourth of the season, guiding DC through the middle overs as the chase remained on track despite occasional breakthroughs from RR.
RR briefly threatened a comeback through disciplined spells and tactical variations, while the introduction of part-time options at key moments nearly shifted momentum back. Archer’s late burst with the ball and RR’s attempt to defend with unconventional bowling options, including Donovan Ferreira, created tension in the final phase, but DC held their nerve.
Despite the brief resistance, DC completed the chase with five wickets in hand, sealing a crucial win that keeps them firmly in the playoff hunt while tightening the pressure on other teams in a rapidly evolving qualification race.
