Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants are in all sorts of trouble and won’t have much room for error when they lock horns in their IPL 2026 match on Monday, May 4 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Both teams are languishing in the bottom two spots on the table and need something more than special to turn their campaigns around.
For MI, there’s absolutely no place to hide, as another defeat would more or less end their campaign. No team in the history of the IPL has qualified for the playoffs with 12 points, and this is exactly why the upcoming game holds so much importance. The Super Giants, on the other hand, aren’t in a comfortable position either, and with a net run rate of -1.106, they face an uphill task as well.
CAN LUCKNOW BOUNCE BACK?
When the Super Giants began their campaign with two wins in their first three games, they looked in pretty good shape. But as the tournament has progressed, they have gone from bad to worse. Having lost their last five matches, LSG are searching for inspiration to turn their fortunes around. Mohsin Khan did provide a spark against Kolkata Knight Riders with a five-wicket haul, but Rinku Singh’s heroics ensured KKR had the last laugh in Lucknow.
Rishabh Pant’s struggles with the bat haven’t helped the Super Giants by any stretch of the imagination. Mohammed Shami’s role against MI will be crucial, given how challenging conditions at the Wankhede can be for bowlers, and this is where his wealth of experience could prove vital. With MI not in the best of form, LSG might see this as an opportunity to return to winning ways.
WILL ROHIT SHARMA RETURN AGAINST LSG?
It’s been quite some time since Rohit Sharma last played, having been sidelined with a hamstring injury he sustained earlier in the tournament. In his absence, MI’s top order has undergone several changes. With the team just one bad game away from elimination, MI will be desperate for Rohit to return at the top of the order and deliver the kind of impact he has produced so often in the past.
If Rohit does make his comeback, Will Jacks will almost certainly be the one to make way. At the Wankhede, big scores are essential, and Rohit’s return would provide a significant boost to their batting.
MI have struggled with the bat, with Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya yet to fire consistently. They also faltered in the death overs against CSK, and overall, the team has been far from its best, making Rohit’s return all the more crucial.
The fact that they have used as many as 23 players in the tournament so far shows just how unsettled Mumbai have been in IPL 2026.
TIME FOR BUMRAH TO ROAR
IPL 2026 has been nothing short of a nightmare for Jasprit Bumrah. He has neither taken wickets regularly nor managed to contain the scoring. Just three wickets from nine games at an economy rate of 8.60 and an average of 94.66 is far from what you expect from a bowler of his calibre. At the Wankhede this season, Bumrah has struggled even more, picking up only one wicket from five games at an economy rate of 9.80.
However, he showed signs of returning to form against CSK, where he dismissed Sanju Samson and finished with figures of 3-0-20-1. But everyone knows what Bumrah is capable of at his absolute best. If MI need him to rediscover that form, it has to be now, otherwise, their wait for a sixth IPL title could stretch even further.
WANKHEDE: PITCH AND CONDITIONS
The pitch at the Wankhede Stadium has been excellent for batters, with an average score of 217 from five matches so far. The other day, SRH chased down 244 against MI, underlining just how tough conditions have been for bowlers in Mumbai. Teams batting first will likely need a minimum of 230 to at least put up a fight. Chasing, therefore, should be the preferred option.
There is no chance of rain, and we can expect a full match in Mumbai on Monday. The skies will be clear, with temperatures around 31 degrees Celsius. However, conditions will be humid, making it important for players to stay well hydrated.
MI vs LSG: HEAD-TO-HEAD
Mumbai Indians have a poor record against the Lucknow Super Giants, having won only two of their eight meetings. At the Wankhede, MI have lost two of the three matches played against the Super Giants. However, in their last meeting, Mumbai defeated Lucknow by 54 runs.
