Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer made a surprising selection call at the toss against Rajasthan Royals, leaving out middle-order mainstay Shashank Singh due to a reported injury. The decision came following Shashank’s recent struggles in the field, where repeated catching lapses have hurt the team’s overall performance.
The call added another layer of intrigue to a high-stakes top-of-the-table clash in Mullanpur, with Punjab Kings entering the match unbeaten while Rajasthan Royals looked to bounce back from a recent defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
“We have one forced change,” said Shreyas Iyer after losing the toss and being asked to bat first by RR captain Riyan Parag. “So, Suryansh (Shedge) comes in for Shashank and the other one is Lockie (Ferguson) comes in for Xavier Bartlett.”
Shashank Singh’s numbers have painted an unflattering picture this season, with just 3 catches taken from 8 chances and 5 drops, translating to a 37.50% catching efficiency. PBKS have struggled as a unit in the field, and Shashank’s lapses have been a visible part of that narrative. He, in fact, was substituted out after his howlers against Delhi Capitals started to cost the team significantly. His drop of KL Rahul, early on in that game, was noteworthy, as Rahul went on to score an unbeaten 152, the highest individual score by an Indian in the Indian Premier league.
Despite a daunting target set by DC following Rahul’s blitzkrieg with the bat, PBKS chased down the target with seven balls to spare. However, Shahasnk has balanced his faulty fielding with useful lower-order contributions, scoring 70 runs at a blistering strike rate of 194.44, often finishing innings strongly.
Shreyas during the toss also offered heartfelt condolences to Azmatalluah Omarzai on the loss of his mother. “On behalf of the whole team, I just want to share our heartfelt condolences to Azmatullah Omarzai and his family for their loss. We are all there to support him through thick and thin,” he added.
INJURY CALL OR FORM CORRECTION?
While the official explanation points to injury, the timing of the omission has sparked discussion given Shashank’s inconsistent fielding form. The move suggests Punjab Kings are increasingly prioritising sharpness in the field as they aim to maintain their unbeaten run in a tightly contested season.
RR MAKE THEIR OWN CHANGES
Rajasthan Royals also made two alterations to their playing XI, bringing in Dasun Shanaka in place of Shimron Hetmyer and Yash Punja replacing Ravi Bishnoi, as they looked to recalibrate after a five-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, a match highlighted by 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s explosive 36-ball century.
