Riyan Parag finally delivered when the pressure was firmly on him, putting aside the chatter around his form and off-field controversy with a well-paced 90 for Rajasthan Royals against Delhi Capitals. It came at a time when RR needed their captain to take control of the innings, and more importantly, hold it together after a shaky start.
This wasn’t a situation built for easy runs either. RR’s powerplay plans were disrupted almost immediately at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, with Mitchell Starc removing Yashasvi Jaiswal in the opening over and Kyle Jamieson dismissing Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for 4 in the next. From a position where another quick start was expected, RR were suddenly 12 for 2 inside 1.3 overs and staring at a completely different kind of innings.

That shift in situation demanded composure more than aggression, and Parag read it well from the moment he walked in. He didn’t look rushed, nor did he try to counter-attack blindly. Instead, he focused on settling things down without letting the scoring rate drop, gradually pulling RR back into the game with a mix of controlled hitting and smart rotation.
HOW RIYAN PARAG STEPPED UP FOR RR VS DC?
Parag’s innings was built around awareness of the situation rather than any one phase of dominance. After those early wickets, he ensured RR got back to 56 for 2 by the end of the powerplay, which, given the start, felt like a strong recovery rather than a routine score.
The key phase came in his partnership with Dhruv Jurel. The two added 102 runs and took RR from a position of early trouble to one of control, without forcing the game. Parag was content picking gaps, punishing loose balls and letting the innings grow rather than trying to accelerate too early.
Even when Jurel fell to Axar Patel, the rhythm didn’t break. In a slightly surprising move, Ravindra Jadeja came in at No. 5 ahead of Donovan Ferreira, and Parag continued in the same manner, adding another 53 runs with him. By then, RR had completely moved past the early collapse and were building towards a strong total.
Parag eventually fell for 90, missing out on what looked like a certain maiden IPL hundred, dismissed by Starc. But the timing of the knock mattered more than the milestone. Coming into the match, Parag managed just 117 in his previous nine innings.
This knock vs DC was the kind of innings RR needed from their captain.
RIYAN PARAG PUTS CRITICISM AND VAPING ROW BEHIND
Parag’s IPL 2026 hasn’t been short on scrutiny. The runs hadn’t come consistently, his captaincy had been questioned in patches, and the vaping incident against Punjab Kings, which led to a 25 percent fine and a demerit point, only added to the attention around him.
That is why this innings carried a bit more weight than usual. It didn’t come in a comfortable phase or after a strong start from the team. RR were 12 for 2, and the game could have drifted quickly if they lost another wicket in that period.
Instead, Parag absorbed that pressure, controlled the tempo and allowed RR to rebuild without losing direction. It may not change the entire narrative around his season overnight, but it does underline what he can offer when he gets the situation right, especially in games where the team needs composure as much as runs.
