Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most competitive T20 leagues in the world, where players not only showcase their skills but also take on leadership roles.
Captaining an IPL team is a tough challenge. While many cricketers have led a single franchise, only a few have had the distinction of captaining three different teams. Here’s a look at those rare names who have led multiple teams in the IPL.
Players who’ve captained three different teams
Ajinkya Rahane: A calm and composed cricketer, Ajinkya Rahane has led three IPL franchises. He first captained Rajasthan Royals, later took charge of Rising Pune Supergiants, and now in 2025, he is leading Kolkata Knight Riders. His experience and leadership qualities make him a valuable asset. In his first match as KKR captain in IPL 2025, he played a fine knock of 56 off 31 balls. However, the team struggled collectively, resulting in a loss.
Shreyas Iyer: PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer has been a consistent performer in IPL and has taken on leadership responsibilities for multiple teams. He first captained Delhi Capitals, then led Kolkata Knight Riders, and in 2025, he has been handed the captaincy of Punjab Kings.
Under his leadership, KKR secured an IPL title, establishing his credentials as a successful captain. This season, Iyer made an impressive start, almost scoring a century in his first match for Punjab Kings, helping his team secure a win.
Steve Smith: Australian batting maestro Steve Smith has also led three IPL teams. He first captained Pune Warriors India, then took over the leadership of Rising Pune Supergiants, and later led Rajasthan Royals. Smith was known for his aggressive captaincy. However, he is not part of any IPL squad this season.
Mahela Jayawardene: Sri Lankan great Mahela Jayawardene captained three IPL teams. He was at the helm for Kings XI Punjab, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, and Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). While he no longer plays, Jayawardene continues to be a part of the IPL as the head coach of Mumbai Indians.
Kumar Sangakkara: Another Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara has had the honor of captaining three different IPL teams. He led Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Deccan Chargers, and Sunrisers Hyderabad during his playing days. He currently serves as the Director of Cricket for Rajasthan Royals.
