Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins hinted that he may skip IPL 2027 to deal with his heavy workload for Australia next year. Cummins has been a part of the SRH franchise for the last three years and helped them reach the playoffs in IPL 2026.
He missed the early part of the season and played just eight games this time around as he was recovering from an injury. He picked up eight wickets during this time. Australia’s schedule next year is packed, beginning with a four-Test series in India during January and February.
They will then host England in Melbourne for a one-off match commemorating 150 years of Test cricket in March, before embarking on a full Ashes campaign ahead of the ODI World Cup in southern Africa, which is set to take place in October and November.
This has made Cummins as his assess options for IPL next season, saying that Tests and the ODI World Cup will be given priority over the league.
“Something has got to give at some stage next year and it’s not going to be test matches or an ODI World Cup,” Cummins told the Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday.
“I will make a call a lot closer and work with the franchise to see what makes sense. Things can change. I’ve had a couple of injuries pop up, so I don’t really want to lock in anything.”
“The priorities for me are always the test matches and that ODI World Cup. I dare say if I play all of India, I need some sort of break before a pretty gruelling Ashes series.”
Cummins’ workload was carefully managed last summer, with the Australian captain featuring only in the Adelaide Ashes Test and sitting out the T20 World Cup while recovering from a persistent back issue.
With fellow pace veterans Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc also entering the latter stages of their careers, Australia are expected to weigh up rotation options, including giving the trio breaks during the home Test series against New Zealand around the turn of the year.
“It’s possible. I think we’re fairly open-minded to anything, as we’ve seen over the last couple of years,” Cummins added.
“I see a world where we’re potentially winding some bowlers down, even say at the back end of an Indian series if they don’t look like they’re going to play, to give them an extra rest ahead of the Ashes.
“It’s going to be a big push the next 18 months or so, but I think we’ll look back on it hopefully and see it as one of the more rewarding periods of our career.”
Australia will be playing a total of 21 Tests from August this year till the start of the ODI World Cup in 2027.
