Jamie Overton is no longer the same bowler he was at the start of the Indian Premier League 2026. Rewind just a few weeks to April, and the contrast is striking. Back then, Tim David had taken him apart in Bengaluru, hammering 30 runs in an over, with one towering hit disappearing over the roof of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
CSK vs MI: HIGHLIGHTS | SCORECARD
It was a night where everything Overton tried seemed to backfire. The more he attempted to cramp David for room from around the wicket, the more the batter unleashed, sending the ball soaring repeatedly into the stands. Fast-forward to Saturday, May 2, and the narrative had flipped.
It was the same Overton who stood tall as a key figure in Chennai Super Kings’ emphatic win over Mumbai Indians in the much-anticipated ‘El Clasico’ at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Trusted with the high-pressure death overs, Overton delivered with precision and poise. He gave nothing away to the likes of Hardik Pandya, Naman Dhir and Robin Minz, batters known for their ability to dismantle bowling attacks.
With tight lines, clever variations, and unwavering control, Overton conceded just a solitary boundary in his spell, ensuring MI finished well short of where they would have hoped.
HOW OVERTON DRAINED THE LIFE OUT OF MI
Going into their last five overs, MI had every chance of capitalising and ensuring they reached at least 180, if not more, especially with six wickets in hand. But all they could manage was 39 runs. And it was the two overs that Overton bowled that made the difference.
Overton turned the death overs into a stranglehold, choking MI just when they needed momentum the most. If there was any lingering memory of David tearing him apart at the Chinnaswamy, this was the perfect redemption.
His spell at the back end was a masterclass in variation and pace. He mixed sharp, short balls with clever off-cutters and never allowed the batters to line him up. The wicket of Naman Dhir was crucial, as he could have made a difference of around 10 runs had he stayed until the 20th over. The off-cutter at 123.8 kmph gripped the surface, deceiving Dhir completely and resulting in a miscued drive.
Pandya, known for his finishing prowess, was kept on a leash with hostile short-pitched bowling that cramped him for room. Overton clocked over 145 kmph, and the deliveries climbed awkwardly on Pandya, forcing mistimed shots. Even when MI attempted to rotate the strike, the pressure never relented.
The penultimate over summed up Overton’s dominance. Conceding just four runs, he executed his plans to perfection, varying pace, hitting hard lengths, and denying any boundary opportunities.
OVERTON EVOLVES AND EVOLVES
Last month, Sunil Gavaskar had said bowling would be CSK’s biggest pain point throughout IPL 2026, and he was right to an extent. His concerns seemed justified when the Super Kings began their campaign with three losses on the trot. Overton, in particular, wasn’t known for his death bowling, and CSK had every reason to worry.
But a month later, Overton is delivering thunderbolts, so much so that one even broke Tilak Varma’s wristband. From having little to no experience in bowling at the death, Overton is now breathing fire in crunch moments. He currently has an economy rate of 9.04, but if you take away his spell against RCB at the Chinnaswamy, that number drops to 8.30, highlighting how one bad outing can skew overall figures.
Immediately after that tough spell against RCB, Overton bounced back in style, rattling Delhi Capitals with impressive figures of 4-0-18-4. He followed that up with a three-wicket haul against Sunrisers Hyderabad, underlining his growing influence with the ball.
With the win over MI, CSK have well and truly revived their campaign and are now firmly in contention for a place in the top four. As the tournament heads into a phase where every result becomes crucial, CSK will be banking on Overton to keep stepping up and easing the burden on their batters.
