Neeraj Chopra will meet Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage for the third time this season when the two javelin stars return to the Diamond League stage in Lausanne on Friday night. The rivalry has so far been one-sided. Pathirage has beaten Chopra in both of their meetings this season, first in Doha and then at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where the Sri Lankan produced a 89.75m throw for gold and Chopra settled for silver with a season-best 85.83m.For Chopra, however, Lausanne is about more than changing that head-to-head record. He is also trying to strengthen his position in the Diamond League standings, with his place in the season-ending final not yet secured.
Pathirage has been the man to beat
Pathirage arrives in Lausanne having produced the best season of his young career. The 23-year-old has won eight of the nine competitions he has entered this season, including Diamond League victories in Doha and Rome and the Commonwealth Games title in Glasgow. He also owns the 2026 world-leading throw of 92.62m, recorded at the Golden Gala in Rome in June. That came after his 88.68m winning throw in Doha, where he finished ahead of Chopra, who managed 85.69m for fourth place.

Their second meeting came in Glasgow last month. Pathirage again took gold, this time with 89.75m, while Chopra improved on his Doha performance with 85.83m.That leaves Pathirage with a 2-0 advantage over Chopra this season, and the distance between their best throws is currently significant.
Chopra returns to a venue where he has excelled
Lausanne is nevertheless a familiar and successful venue for Chopra. He won the meeting in 2022 with 89.08m and returned the following year to win again with 87.66m. In 2024, he finished second after throwing 89.49m.His Diamond League breakthrough came in 2022, although his involvement in the series dates back to 2017, when he competed in Paris, Monaco and Zurich.

Chopra’s Diamond League personal best remains the 90.23m he threw in Doha in 2025, while he also won the Paris meeting that year. His only Diamond League appearance so far in 2026 came in Doha, where his 85.69m was enough for fourth place. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion now arrives in Lausanne after his silver-medal performance in Glasgow, where his 85.83m remains his season best.
Why Lausanne matters for Chopra’s Diamond League qualification
The Lausanne competition carries particular importance because Chopra has not yet officially qualified for the 2026 Diamond League Final. He currently sits seventh in the standings with six points, while only the top six in the javelin standings automatically qualify for the final, which will be held in Brussels on September 4 and 5.Pathirage and Anderson Peters have already secured their places after collecting 23 and 22 points respectively. That makes every available point important for Chopra. After Lausanne, there is only one more Diamond League meeting featuring the men’s javelin, Zurich on August 27, giving him limited opportunities to improve his position before the final qualification picture is settled.Chopra has previously won the Diamond League Final in 2022 and finished runner-up in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
A strong field awaits
Pathirage may have the momentum, but Chopra will have plenty of competition beyond his Sri Lankan rival.Two-time Olympic medallist Keshorn Walcott, the reigning world champion Anderson Peters and Czech veteran Jakub Vadlejch are all in the field. The competition also includes Americans Curtis Thompson and Marc Anthony Minichello, Ukraine’s Artur Felfner and Switzerland’s Simon Wieland. The Lausanne meeting therefore gives Chopra two immediate targets: close the gap on a rival who has beaten him twice this season and collect enough Diamond League points to strengthen his route to Brussels. The men’s javelin competition is scheduled for 11:52pm IST at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise, where Chopra has already produced two winning performances. This time, the stakes are higher: a third meeting with Pathirage, a place in the Diamond League Final to secure and a season-best mark of 85.83m that he will want to push considerably further.
