Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru meet at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Thursday, May 7, with the two sides entering the fixture at opposite ends of the playoff race. While RCB are firmly in contention for a top-two finish, LSG are staring at near-certain elimination after a damaging six-match losing run. Historically, 16 points have been enough for qualifying to the playoffs, with Net Run Rate coming into the picture in tightly packed seasons. That leaves LSG with absolutely no margin for error, while RCB are within touching distance of sealing a knockout berth.
The reverse fixture earlier this season underlined the gulf between the teams. RCB bowled out LSG for just 146 before completing the chase with 29 balls to spare in a five-wicket victory. Bengaluru’s pace attack led by Josh Hazlewood, controlled proceedings, while their batters comfortably negotiated the chase in what proved to be one of LSG’s most one-sided defeats of the campaign.
LSG, however, head into this game after showing signs of life with the bat despite another defeat. In their last game against Mumbai Indians, Nicholas Pooran smashed a 21-ball 63 while Mitchell Marsh added 44 off 25 as Lucknow put up 228/5 after being asked to bat first. Their bowling unit, though, failed to defend the total as MI chased down 229 with eight balls remaining.
RCB, meanwhile, suffered a setback in their last outing against Gujarat Titans. Bengaluru were bowled out for 155 after a middle-order collapse, and GT chased the target down by four wickets with more than four overs to spare. Despite that defeat, RCB remain one of the most consistent sides this season, having lost just three games out of nine.

LSG IPL 2026 Playoff Qualification Scenario
LSG’s qualification hopes are hanging by a mathematical thread. They currently have just four points from nine matches, having managed only two wins all season. To stay alive, Lucknow must win all five of their remaining matches, only to reach the 14-point mark. After RCB, they face Chennai Super Kings twice, before traveling to Rajasthan Royals and finally welcome Punjab Kings home.
Even then, qualification would depend on a highly specific chain of results elsewhere in the tournament, along with a significant improvement in NRR.However, most importantly, another defeat would effectively end their playoff hopes.
RCB IPL 2026 Playoff Qualification Scenario
RCB are in a commanding position with 12 points from nine matches. Two more victories from their remaining five fixtures should comfortably secure qualification based on historical playoff cut-offs.
A win against LSG would move Bengaluru to 14 points and leave them needing just one more victory to all but guarantee a place in the playoffs. It would also strengthen their push for a top-two finish, which offers the advantage of an additional route to the final through Qualifier 1.

LSG vs RCB Pitch Report
The Ekana Stadium surface is expected to favour bowlers, particularly spinners and pacers using cutters and variations. The black-soil pitch traditionally plays slow and offers grip as the match progresses.
Batters are likely to find stroke-making difficult due to the sluggish nature of the wicket and the large boundary dimensions. Teams are expected to rely heavily on strike rotation rather than boundary hitting. A total in the 140-165 range could prove competitive, while anything above 175 may be difficult to chase on this surface.
