Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru have the perfect opportunity to end Lucknow Super Giants’ fading playoff hopes when the two sides meet at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Thursday.
With the playoff race entering its decisive phase, RCB will know there is little room to ease off now. SRH’s big win over PBKS on May 6 and the playoff schedule, announced on Wednesday, has only raised the stakes further, with the winner of Qualifier 1 set to enjoy a crucial break before the final.
That makes every point even more valuable, especially for a side like RCB that remains firmly in the hunt. Against an LSG side that has struggled for consistency and sits on the brink of elimination, Bengaluru have a chance not only to strengthen their own position but also deal a major blow to a direct rival.
CAN RCB TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEIR BREAK?
Royal Challengers Bengaluru head into Thursday’s clash with a valuable edge, having enjoyed a week-long break before taking on Lucknow Super Giants.
At this stage of the tournament, that gap could prove crucial. With teams juggling travel, fatigue and mounting pressure, RCB have had the rare luxury of time to reset, recover and regroup after their defeat to Gujarat Titans.
That break should allow Bengaluru to iron out the issues that led to their batting collapse in Ahmedabad, while also giving key players time to recharge ahead of a critical stretch in the playoff race.
It could also prove especially useful for players carrying minor niggles, with RCB likely to benefit from the extra recovery time after a packed run of fixtures.
Against an LSG side coming off another draining defeat and still searching for answers, RCB will know this is a chance to strike with fresher legs and clearer minds.
With the playoff race tightening, Bengaluru cannot afford to let that advantage go to waste.
CAN LSG FIGURE THEMSELVES OUT?
Lucknow Super Giants head into another must-win game still searching for clarity, particularly with the bat.
Since Josh Inglis returned to the side, LSG have leaned heavily on their overseas batting core, but the constant reshuffling has only added to the uncertainty. Inglis has been pushed up to open, Nicholas Pooran has been moved back to No. 3 and the middle order has continued to shift around them, leaving the batting unit without much stability.
That lack of clarity has reflected in their results.
While Pooran’s return to form with a much-needed fifty offered some encouragement, LSG now face a key decision. The franchise will be tempted to persist with him at No. 3 after the innings helped arrest his slump, but that could once again force changes elsewhere in the order.
The bigger question is whether LSG stick with this new combination or revert to a more settled structure from earlier in the season.
At this stage of the tournament, they can ill afford another tactical reset.

LUCKNOW: PITCH AND WEATHER
Lucknow has been one of the toughest venues for batters in IPL 2026, with the Ekana Stadium producing the lowest scoring games of the season so far and an average first-innings total of around 155.
Although the square boundaries are comparatively short at roughly 56 to 64 metres, the long straight boundary, extending to nearly 77 metres, makes clean hitting down the ground far more challenging.
The pitch is expected to test batters once again. It looks dry on the surface, has very little grass and could offer uneven bounce as the match goes on. There is also likely to be some assistance for slower balls and spin later in the evening, especially after a hot day in Lucknow.
Even so, the surface is firm underneath, which should allow the ball to come onto the bat nicely in the early stages and reward positive strokeplay in the powerplay. Teams chasing have enjoyed a clear edge at this venue, winning 12 of the last 15 matches, which makes the toss particularly important. A score in the 170 range should be considered competitive.
According to the weather forecasts. Expect the temperatures to hover in the high twenties and low thirty degrees Celsius. But there is up to a 40 per cent chance of rain in the afternoon period with chances of thunderstorms as well. If it persists, we could be in for a reduced game as well.
