The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched a new AI-powered grievance portal that lets citizens report food and drug safety violations without filling out long forms.

The portal was launched last month by Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. He spoke about the initiative at an event in Pune on Saturday and said there would be “no compromise” when it comes to public health.

How Does The New Portal Work?

The process is simple. Citizens can speak their complaint instead of typing it out. The AI system accepts complaints in Marathi, Hindi and English. It converts the spoken complaint into a written complaint and registers it on the portal.

Once submitted, the complaint is automatically sent to the relevant FDA officer. The system also tracks what happens next. If a complaint is not addressed within the stipulated time, it is automatically escalated.

Citizens can also track the status of their complaint online. The portal has been designed with auto-assignment, auto-escalation, accountability and traceability features so that complaints can be followed from registration to action.

Mundhe announced the portal last month, describing it as an AI-enabled platform with auto-assignment, auto-escalation and built-in accountability.

What Can You Report?

Citizens can use the portal to report issues such as:

  • Adulterated or unsafe food and sweets
  • Fake, counterfeit or substandard medicines
  • Illegal storage or sale of banned products such as gutkha and pan masala
  • Food establishments operating without valid safety licences
  • Other food and drug safety violations

The launch comes as the Maharashtra FDA steps up enforcement across the state under Mundhe.

The department has recently taken action against food adulteration, fake medicines, illegal cosmetics and unsafe food products. It has also seized adulterated milk, illegal cosmetics and unlicensed Ayurvedic medicines, suspended licences of establishments that violated food safety rules and increased surveillance of high-risk categories such as milk and dairy products.

The new grievance system gives consumers a direct channel to flag such violations instead of relying only on routine inspections.
