Mahindra targets pickup market with Scorpio X trademark registration, hinting at a rugged, feature-packed model with advanced tech and safety.

The prominent Indian automaker Mahindra has set its sights on the pickup truck segment with the registration of a new trademark – Scorpio X.

This move hints at the possibility of a new model joining their lineup soon.

While not officially confirmed, speculation suggests that this could be the name for the Global Pik Up concept, which made its debut last year. The Scorpio pickup concept, internally known as Z121, was unveiled in South Africa, signalling its status as a global offering intended for markets like South Africa, Australia and the Middle East.

The upcoming Scorpio X pickup will be based on a “next-generation ladder frame platform,” designed to achieve high safety ratings in both Global NCAP and Euro NCAP crash tests, as reported by Autocar.

While the concept showcased last year featured several design elements typical of a concept vehicle, the production version is expected to undergo some toning down.

Nevertheless, it will retain a rugged design, with substantial cladding and ample ground clearance suitable for off-road terrain.

To enhance cost-efficiency, it is likely to share certain components with the Scorpio N, including the front fascia, front doors and interior elements such as the dashboard, steering wheel, instrumentation, and seats.

The Scorpio X pickup is expected to be equipped with a host of advanced features and technologies, including Level 2 Autonomous Driving, semi-automatic parking and 5G-based connectivity features.

Catering to the Indian market’s preferences, the pickup will also include a sunroof.

Furthermore, it will offer Trailer Sway Mitigation, an Electronic Stability Program (ESP) feature that detects trailer sway and applies brake and throttle control interventions to counteract it. The new Scorpio X will be propelled by a Gen-II all-aluminum mHawk diesel engine, matched with either a 6-speed manual or an Aisin-sourced 6-speed automatic transmission.

The vehicle will come with 4WD and shift-on-the-fly technology, offering four drive modes: Normal, Grass-Gravel-Snow, Mud-Rut, and Sand. Additionally, depending on the market, a petrol engine option may also be available.

In terms of pricing, the upcoming Mahindra Scorpio X is estimated to fall in the range of Rs 12 lakh to Rs 22 lakh (ex-showroom). Positioned to compete with the likes of the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max V-Cross, the Scorpio X is poised to make a strong impact in the competitive pickup segment.
