Marta Kostyuk’s dream Centre Court debut ended in a historic milestone as the Ukrainian outclassed Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-2 to reach her maiden Wimbledon semi-final on Wednesday. The victory sent Kostyuk into back-to-back Grand Slam semi-finals after she made her last-four debut at the French Open last month, confirming her status as one of the form players on the WTA Tour.
The 24-year-old has now won 21 of her last 22 matches, extending a stunning run that began after returning from the injury she suffered during the Australian swing. Her improved movement, aggressive shot-making and growing confidence have transformed her into a genuine title contender, with every aspect of her game clicking into place.
Kostyuk also became the latest first-time Centre Court debutant to embrace the occasion, producing one of the finest performances of her career to set up a Wimbledon semi-final against Czech Linda Noskova.
After the match, Kostyuk admitted simply playing on Centre Court had fulfilled a lifelong dream.
“Playing on this unbelievable court is obviously a dream come true. Winning here was not even in the plans today. I just wanted to go out, enjoy myself and put on a good show. It’s always incredible to play in front of a packed stadium, and here it feels like it’s always packed. So thank you so much, guys, for your energy today.”
She also revealed she had visited Centre Court a day earlier to take in the surroundings before her debut.
“One hundred per cent. Thank God my coach made me walk here yesterday. I was flabbergasted by this entrance and everything inside. I was like, ‘Wow, I need one day to recover from what I saw.’
“I was on this court as a spectator once, nine years ago, watching Roger. It was super special to be back here as a player. I did a sort of walk of honour around Centre Court, then sat beside it and took a moment to soak it all in. And now, after a win, I’m soaking it all in once again,” Kostyuk added.
KOSTYUK DOMINATES PAOLINI
Kostyuk controlled the contest from the opening exchanges with fearless, first-strike tennis, taking time away from Paolini with deep returns and powerful groundstrokes. She broke the Italian’s serve in the sixth game of the opening set to move 4-2 ahead before confidently serving out the set 6-3.
The Ukrainian maintained the intensity after the changeover, securing another break in the third game of the second set for a 2-1 lead. With Paolini struggling to find answers, Kostyuk continued to dictate rallies and earned a second break of the set in the seventh game to move 5-2 ahead.
She then served out the match with authority, completing a composed and dominant display in just over an hour to book her maiden Wimbledon semi-final berth.
