Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that Iran attempted to assassinate one of his sons, saying the alleged threat explains the security arrangements around his family.
Netanyahu made the claim during a live broadcast in a conversation with Noam Amir, according to C14.
“Iran tried to assassinate one of my sons, therefore the security on them is not a luxury,” Netanyahu was quoted as saying.

In the interview, Netanyahu said the alleged threat was a reason why security for his family should not be considered a luxury.

“Iran tried to harm one of my children. Okay. And therefore, this security [arrangement] is not… These are not targets,” he said.
“Without it (protection), they could succeed [in killing my son.] People need to show some restraint, especially during an election campaign,” he added.
Netanyahu did not identify which of his two sons, Yair or Avner, was allegedly targeted.
The Israeli prime minister has two sons and a daughter. His elder son, Yair, has spent an extended period in Miami since 2024 and has reportedly received Shin Bet protection during his stay. His younger son, Avner, has lived primarily in Israel.
Netanyahu’s remarks came during a discussion about reports that Israel’s Shin Bet security agency had declined to provide a security detail for Gadi Eisenkot, who is expected to contest the upcoming elections against Netanyahu.
Netanyahu said he had spoken with the Shin Bet chief about security arrangements for political candidates.
“I spoke with the Shin Bet chief and asked him to provide appropriate security to any prime ministerial candidate,” Netanyahu said.

The security provided to Netanyahu’s family has also been the subject of controversy, particularly over the reported cost to Israeli taxpayers of protecting Yair while he is in the US.
Netanyahu’s latest claim comes against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict involving Israel, Iran and the US. However, he provided no independent evidence or further details to substantiate the alleged assassination attempt.
