Some games feel big. Some feel loud. And then there are games like this. You just know runs are coming.

Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals arrive with batting units that don’t really do slow starts. PBKS have already chased down 265 this season, the highest successful chase in T20 history. RR, meanwhile, have crossed 200 multiple times this season and continue to play at a relentless tempo.

The venue only adds to the mood. Mullanpur has quietly turned into a batting paradise, with an average first-innings score above 200 in IPL 2026. Teams batting second have also found success, which only adds to the expectation of another high-scoring contest.

But scratch beneath the surface, and the stories split.

Punjab are unbeaten with six wins from seven games, with one no result. They sit at the top of the IPL points table and have looked the most complete side in the competition so far. Rajasthan have five wins from eight matches but have lost three of their last four, slipping slightly after a strong start.

And right at the centre of RR’s campaign is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

He has 357 runs in 8 matches at an average of 44.63 and a strike rate of 234.87. He also has a 36-ball hundred to his name this season and has taken apart top bowlers across teams. But the bigger question remains. Can RR keep relying on him alone against a side that keeps finding different match-winners?

Across the dugout stands Shreyas Iyer, who has quietly put together one of the best seasons by a captain. With 279 runs in 7 innings at an average of 69.75 and a strike rate of 186, including four fifties, he has combined leadership with consistency.

SOORYAVANSHI BOOM VS PBKS TEST

Sooryavanshi has been unstoppable. His 357 runs put him among the leading run-scorers this season, and his strike rate is among the highest in the league. His 36-ball hundred against Sunrisers Hyderabad showed just how quickly he can change games.

But RR’s dependence on their top order is clear.

Sooryavanshi, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel have done the bulk of the scoring. Beyond them, the numbers dip sharply. Riyan Parag has managed just 88 runs in 8 matches at an average of 12.57 and a strike rate of 112.82. Shimron Hetmyer has also struggled to finish consistently.

That is where PBKS can press their advantage. Arshdeep Singh has been effective with the new ball, while Marco Jansen and Vijaykumar Vyshak have chipped in with control and breakthroughs. If Punjab break through early, RR’s middle order will be under pressure again.

IYER EDGE OVER PARAG

This is where Punjab look stronger.

Iyer has controlled games throughout the season and has slowly become the new chase master in the IPL. In the record chase of 265 against Delhi, he scored an unbeaten 71 off 36 balls, striking three fours and seven sixes to guide the chase.

Parag’s numbers tell a different story. His 88 runs in 8 matches have come at a low average, and his captaincy has come under scrutiny. Decisions around bowling changes and underutilisation of key options have been questioned, especially in close games.

In a high-scoring contest, clarity in decision-making could be decisive.

PBKS FIELDING A SMALL CONCERN

Punjab’s campaign has been near-perfect, but their fielding has shown occasional lapses.

Shashank Singh dropped multiple chances in the previous game, including a straightforward catch and a boundary-line error. These moments have not cost PBKS heavily yet, but against a side like RR, such mistakes can quickly swing the momentum.

HEAD TO HEAD

The Royals have dominated their rivalry with the Kings since the start of the IPL, winning 17 out of the 30 games between both sides. The rest of the 13 matches have gone in favour of Punjab. Last season, both teams traded wins as Rajasthan won in Mullanpur and Punjab returned the favour in Jaipur.

However, the current form favours PBKS.

PITCH AND CONDITIONS

The Mullanpur surface has favoured batters this season. The average first-innings score has crossed 200, and teams have consistently posted and chased big totals.

There is good bounce and carry, allowing strokeplay. Bowlers who hit hard lengths or vary pace have had some success, but overall, this is a venue where batters dominate.

TEAM NEWS

PBKS are expected to stick with their winning combination. Their batting unit has been firing, and the bowling has backed it up with timely wickets.

RR may look to tweak their middle order or bowling combinations after failing to defend 228 in their last outing.

MATCH OUTLOOK

PBKS come in with form, balance and momentum. Six wins, one no result, and a batting unit that has already chased 265 underline their strength.

RR have the firepower at the top, led by Sooryavanshi’s 357 runs at a strike rate above 230, but they will need more from the middle order.

If the game turns into another high-scoring contest, both teams have the tools to dominate. But over 40 overs, Punjab’s consistency and depth might give them the edge.
