R Praggnanandhaa crowned a remarkable week by winning Norway Chess 2026, becoming the first Indian to claim the prestigious title since the tournament began in 2013. After securing the championship, the Indian Grandmaster described it as the biggest achievement of his career, citing the strength of the field and the presence of world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen as factors that made the triumph especially memorable.
The title was made even more remarkable by the strength of the competition, with all six players in the Open section rated above 2700 and world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen among the participants.
“I think this is like the biggest win of my career. It was also stronger in terms of average rating. In tournaments like Wijk Aan Zee, you have some 2600-rated players, but here it’s just the top players,” Praggnanandhaa said after securing the title.
Praggnanandhaa’s triumph was built on resilience. After a difficult start to the tournament, the teenager responded with four consecutive victories and finished on 18 points. Along the way, he defeated seven-time champion Carlsen twice — a rare accomplishment against one of the greatest players in chess history.
“So, winning this is more special and adding to it, Magnus was there. Also winning four games in a row. So, certainly this will come right at the top,” he added, referring to his stunning late surge that helped him clinch the championship.
The title was confirmed after Wesley So failed to register a classical victory over Alireza Firouzja in the final round, leaving the Indian in control of his own destiny against Vincent Keymer.
FANS MOB PRAGGNANANDHAA IN OSLO
The celebrations extended well beyond the playing hall. As Praggnanandhaa left the venue following his title-winning performance, fans in Oslo gathered around the young champion, eager to congratulate him on his historic achievement.
Despite the long and emotionally draining tournament, Praggnanandhaa patiently stopped to interact with almost everyone who approached him. Smiling for photographs, signing autographs, and exchanging a few words with supporters, he soaked in a memorable moment that reflected his growing popularity on the global chess circuit.
The warm reception served as a fitting end to a landmark week for the Indian star, whose victory over a world-class field has further cemented his status as one of chess’s brightest young talents. With the World Rapid Team Championship in Hong Kong coming up later this month, Praggnanandhaa plans to take a short break before returning to competition, carrying the confidence of what he calls the most special title of his career.
