Yohan Poonawalla, the managing director of Poonawalla Group, has recently acquired a unique piece of British royal history. This acquisition comes in the form of the late Queen Elizabeth II‘s Range Rover, which was put up for resale online. What sets this car apart is that it still retains the same registration number, OU16 XVH, as used by the late Queen.Poonawalla expressed his delight in acquiring this remarkable piece of automotive history and mentioned that the retention of the original registration number was an added bonus.
“I am delighted to have acquired this remarkable piece of automotive history,” ET quoted Poonawalla as saying. “Once a car leaves the royal household, the number plate changes. What is unique about this car is the fact that it still retains the same registration number, OU16 XVH, as used by the late Queen. (That has) turned out to be an added bonus,” he said.
The 2016 Range Rover SDV8 Autobiography LWB edition, painted in Loire blue with ivory upholstery, has covered approximately 18,000 miles. The reserve price set for this car on the Bramley’s Auctioneers website was 224,850 pounds (over Rs 2.25 crore). Poonawalla chose to purchase the car privately, avoiding the auction process.
This Range Rover was specifically designed for royal use and features unique modifications, including covert lighting, specially adapted fixed steps, and police emergency lighting. One notable modification made for the Queen is the addition of grab handles in the rear for ease of entry and exit. Poonawalla stated that he intends to retain all the modifications made to the car.
When Poonawalla learned about the availability of the car, he made a quick decision to acquire it. He discussed the matter with his wife and children and proceeded with the purchase, emphasizing that special cars like this are rare to come by.
The vehicle also comes equipped with optional extras such as a Shooting Star headliner, RR monograms on the headrests, massage seats, privacy glass, and driver assistance systems.
Yohan Poonawalla is a regular participant in leading concours d’elegance and other motoring events worldwide. He has built an impressive collection of historically significant motorcars, known as the ‘Yohan Poonawalla Collection.’ This collection includes cars previously owned by prominent figures such as maharajas, nawabs, sheikhs, presidents, and even the Pope.
