Tright here’s sweetness, unhappiness and appeal on this animated story concerning the friendship – and presumably extra – between a canine and a robotic in Eighties New York. It’s a universe solely populated by anthropomorphised animals; no people and no dialogue. The director is Pablo Berger, working from a script he cowrote with Sara Varon, adapting her 2007 graphic novel. Their story is laced with comedy, tenderness, loneliness and friendship; in reality, it’s in all probability a bit too sluggish for many under-10s. One of the best factor about it should sail proper over pint-sized heads, for certain: the lovingly realised old-school New York, scuzzy and ungentrified, with graffiti and trash, crackling with edge and vitality.

In a New York house block, Canine spends solitary nights consuming ready-meal macaroni for one. (Inside his microwave, thick globs of cheese spit like boiling scorching lava; the animation is an absolute delight.) Canine’s lonely days are over when he buys a friendship robotic, the Amica 2000. The pair grow to be greatest friends (although the way in which they maintain fingers suggests there is perhaps extra to it). Robotic’s lust for all times is infectious: joyfully watching a busking octopus drumming within the subway; feeling the sand beneath his metallic toes at Coney Island. (My favorite picture of the film is a rhino sunbathing in a bikini thong.)

What occurs subsequent on the seaside explains the title. After paddling within the sea, Robotic’s joints rust over; he can’t transfer. But it surely’s the ultimate day of the season, and the seaside is locked up, off-limits till subsequent spring. So poor Robotic lies all winter within the sand, his creativeness wandering. And oh what desires; in a single, he photos himself in The Wizard of Oz, with tap-dancing sunflowers proper out of a Busby Berkeley routine. In the meantime, again within the metropolis, Canine tries his doggone greatest to liberate Robotic from the seaside. Then he pines, after which, slowly … effectively, the query arises, when is it OK for the guts to maneuver on?

It is a candy, fuzzy film, presumably slightly soft-hearted. Nonetheless, I dare anybody to observe the ultimate moments with out a lump within the throat.

Robotic Desires is in UK cinemas from 22 March
