Shreyas Iyer has officially replaced Suryakumar Yadav to become India’s new T20I captain. This seismic decision comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s recent Apex Council meeting, triggered by Suryakumar’s individual struggles with the bat despite leading the side to a successful T20 World Cup title defense in March 2026.
The squad, scheduled to be announced this Saturday, signals a complete changing of the guard as India prepares for its first T20I assignment since lifting the silverware. The national selectors have made this decisive move with an eye firmly on the future, laying down a long-term blueprint targeted at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 and the subsequent T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
This marks the second successive year in which India’s selectors have made such a ruthless leadership call immediately following major silverware. In 2025, Rohit Sharma was replaced as ODI captain ahead of the tour of Australia just months after guiding India to the Champions Trophy title. However, unlike Rohit, who remained a vital part of the ODI squad, Suryakumar has been dropped from the T20I setup entirely.
The upcoming assignment will see the newly molded side travel to Ireland for two T20Is in Belfast on June 26 and 28. This will be immediately followed by a grueling five-match T20I series in England from July 1 to 11.
Furthermore, this very assignment will double up as vital preparation for the upcoming Asian Games. The BCCI has made it clear that India will be sending their first-choice squad to the continental event as they look to defend the gold medal they clinched in 2022.
WHY WAS SHREYAS NAMED INDIA T20I CAPTAIN?
The selectors have rewarded Shreyas Iyer not just for his staggering consistency with the bat, but for an immaculate leadership resume in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Shreyas has proven himself an elite strategist across franchises, famously guiding the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title in 2024, and leading both Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the finals in 2020 and 2025, respectively.
While international team combinations and the heavily occupied middle-order positions of Suryakumar and Tilak Varma kept Shreyas out of India’s T20I XI since December 2023, his blistering white-ball form became impossible to ignore:
- IPL 2025: 604 runs at a destructive strike rate of 175.07.
- IPL 2026: 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81.
While Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan were considered dark horses in the captaincy race, Iyer’s vast leadership experience gave him the definitive edge. The selectors intend to build a stable hierarchy around him, meaning either Tilak or Ishan will be officially appointed as his deputy.
WHY WAS SURYAKUMAR REMOVED AS INDIA T20I CAPTAIN?
Suryakumar Yadav’s removal marks a stunning, yet historically consistent, pattern of ruthless calls by the Indian team management. Despite Suryakumar leading the side on a prolific run and capping it off with a successful T20 World Cup title defense at home in March 2026, the 35-year-old’s individual returns prompted the selectorial axe.
The decision-makers are strictly looking ahead to the 2028 cycle, and Suryakumar’s age, paired with a sharp dip in his standard of play, sealed his exit:
T20 World Cup 2026: A lukewarm 242 runs across 9 innings at a strike rate of 136.72.
IPL 2026: A major slump, yielding just 270 runs in 13 innings at an ordinary average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54.
Believing his current trajectory won’t sustain until the LA Olympics, the BCCI Apex Council chose to look toward younger leadership rather than delay an inevitable transition.
