The IPL playoff race is heating up as the Punjab Kings and the Gujarat Titans battle it out in Ahmedabad. Earlier in the day, in-form Sunrisers Hyderabad look to strengthen their position on the points table against a resurgent Kolkata Knight Riders, who have shown some signs of life in them at the Uppal.
However, the firm focus will be on the evening game, which will be a proper clash of ideologies. When you look at Punjab and Gujarat, the difference is almost like attending a rock band’s concert and a ghazal session. One is all about giving you that adrenaline rush with the big hits, and the other is about being simple, soothing, and at times, just old school cricket.
The current PBKS can be considered the most attacking batting lineup in the history of the IPL, and the numbers back it up. Across four metrics. They lead the all-time charts across the board — boasting a staggering average of 43.1, a strike rate of 186, striking a boundary every 3.6 balls, and clearing the ropes every 7.9 deliveries.
But the gulf between their batting and bowling was exposed during the loss to RR when the Royals chased down 223 with ease. GT, on the other hand, are once again dependent on their top three, who have shown signs of being more aggressive. Their bowling seem to be in top form with the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Arshad Khan, Rashid Khan, and Mohammed Siraj stepping up this season.
A win for GT will spice up the playoff race as they will enter the top four. For Punjab, they need two more wins to reach the magical 16 points mark to secure a playoff spot.
For SRH, another win will be their sixth on the trot and push them ever so close to a playoff spot themselves. For KKR, it is all about survival and another victory will keep them just about alive in the competition for now.
With so much at stake, Sunday promises to be a cracker with lots of runs expected and some incredible moments.
HOLDER STEPS UP, ARSHDEEP FADING?
GT finally seems to have found balance, something they have missed since the departure of Hardik Pandya in 2024. They have struck gold in their Rs. 7 Crore buy of Jason Holder, who is finally stepping up on the big stage of the IPL.
His bowling remains the main calling card, but Holder is one of the best fielders and is a big-hitter with the bat. He picked two wickets, claimed three catches and scored a handy 12 runs in the win over RCB in their last game.
Against the big-hitting PBKS, the variety that Holder brings will be key, especially if they get off to a rocking start. On the other hand, Arshdeep Singh’s magic seems to be fading.
Often effective with his slower deliveries and yorkers, this season, Arshdeep has conceded 40 or more on six occasions from the eight matches played so far. ‘
He went for 68 runs against RR and his growing affinity for conceding extras is coming to haunt PBKS badly. If Punjab needs to go past the final hurdle this season, they will need the bowling group to step up. Which means that Arshdeep needs to start to a bit more flashy like his reels on social media.
WILL KKR FINALLY UNLEASH PATHIRANA?
For KKR fans the feeling of seeing Matheesha Pathirana with the squad would have been like a kid searching for that free toy inside that cereal box.
The wait has been a long and painful one, but they finally have the prize. Now, it is all about unleashing him against a Hyderabad side who have found their mojo once again.
Pathirana is coming after a lengthy layoff, but will be expected to play the exact role that Jasprit Bumrah plays for MI. Probably an over or two in the powerplay, one in the middle, or two at the death.
These are the areas that KKR have been lacking for consistency, something they cannot afford against SRH with the form they’re in. Hyderabad made a mockery of the 244 chase against MI at the Wankhede, with Travis Head finding form and Heinrich Klaasen showing he has no side effects from taking international retirement.
But to get Pathirana in, KKR will need to undergo a massive change in their batting setup at the top or in the middle. Tim Seifert has failed to impress while Rovman Powell has added some much-needed steel in the middle and with his fielding.
The SRH bowling has also undergone a massive change with the return of Pat Cummins and the rise of talents like Sakib Hussain and Praful Hinge, meaning that any change in the batting order will come with consequences for KKR.
SRH have emerged as the most efficient death-overs bowling unit this season, leading the charts with an economy of 8.6 and a strike rate of one wicket every 9.6 balls.
Spearheaded by the pinpoint yorkers of Sakib Hussain, Praful Hinge and Eshan Malinga, their attack has been relentlessly accurate — resulting in the best wicket-threatening consistency in the league, with a remarkable 25% of their deliveries at the death crashing into the stumps.
This means that the margin for error for KKR batters will be minimal and the late rescue act put on by Rinku Singh in the last two games may not find the desired output.
HYDERABAD AND AHMEDABAD: PITCH AND CONDITIONS
The pitch at the Uppal is known to be a batting paradise and since it is an afternoon game, there won’t be any presence of dew. The game will be played on the same surface that hosted the SRH vs RR clash on April 13. Interestingly, all three completed matches on this pitch prior to this season were won by teams chasing, but SRH bucked the trend in that fixture by successfully defending a formidable 216 against RR.
It is expected to be a hot afternoon in Hyderabad, with temperature hitting a high of 39 degree celsius.
In Ahmedabad, the match is expected to be a high-scoring one and pitch five is expected to be used. The last match hosted by the track was where MI were able to defend 199, thanks to some smart bowling. A similar game plan will be needed on Sunday as the temperature will be close to 40 degree celsius with a humidity of 40 percent.
SRH VS KKR AND GT VS PBKS: HEAD-TO-HEAD
SRH and KKR have faced each other 31 times in the IPL, with Kolkata having the advantage with a 20-11 scoreline. Hyderabad have beaten KKR in their last two games, including the reverse fixture at the Eden Gardens earlier on in the season.
GT and PBKS have faced each other seven times in the IPL with Punjab edging the rivalry 4-3. This includes a win in the reverse fixture in Mullanpur where PBKS was able to hold on and get the win in the end.
