A legal controversy has erupted around 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after a Karnataka-based social activist sought an FIR over the youngster’s participation in the Indian Premier League, alleging that allowing a minor to play in a commercial tournament amounts to child labour.
Sooryavanshi, one of the breakout stars of IPL 2026, has found himself at the centre of an unexpected legal debate after activist CM Shivakumar Nayak moved to file a complaint questioning whether a minor should be allowed to participate in a high-profile professional sporting league.
Nayak has sought registration of an FIR, arguing that minors should not be engaged in large-scale commercial sporting events and that Sooryavanshi’s IPL participation could amount to a violation of child labour laws.
The complaint, however, has triggered sharp criticism online, with several users pushing back strongly against the comparison between child labour and professional sport.
One user argued that if a young athlete earns his place through skill, contracts and regulations, “that’s not exploitation, that’s an opportunity,” adding that by the same logic, every under-18 athlete representing India should also be questioned.
Another pointed out that Sooryavanshi, at 15, falls under the adolescent category and is participating in a professional sporting league with the consent of both his parents and himself, arguing that such participation cannot be equated with child labour.
Others drew parallels with Indian cricket’s past, pointing to players such as Sachin Tendulkar and Parthiv Patel, both of whom broke through at a young age, with many questioning why a similar debate had not surfaced then.
A large section of the online reaction has instead centred on the need to protect and nurture exceptional sporting talent rather than dragging young athletes into legal disputes.
What do the rules say?
The debate has also brought renewed attention to the ICC’s rules on age eligibility in cricket.
In November 2020, the ICC introduced a minimum age restriction for international cricket, stating that players must be at least 15 years old to feature in any form of men’s, women’s or Under-19 international cricket.
“The Board confirmed the introduction of minimum age restrictions for international cricket to improve safeguarding of players,” the ICC said in its official statement.
The rule applies across ICC events, bilateral cricket and Under-19 internationals, and was introduced primarily as a player welfare measure.
Importantly, that rule applies only to international cricket and does not govern domestic franchise leagues such as the IPL, where Sooryavanshi has emerged as one of the standout performers this season.

That is what makes the legal complaint particularly contentious.
Sooryavanshi has been one of the standout players of IPL 2026 and among the biggest stories of the season. The teenager has scored 400 runs in 10 matches at an average of 40 and a staggering strike-rate of 237, placing him firmly in contention for the Orange Cap.
Already a key player for Rajasthan Royals at just 15, Sooryavanshi has not only justified the hype around him but has emerged as one of the central figures in their playoff push.
