Defending champion Iga Swiatek’s Wimbledon title defence came to a crashing halt on Saturday, July 4 after World No. 32 Alexandra Eala delivered another fearless performance to claim a stunning 7-6 (11-9), 6-2 victory in the third round on Centre Court.
The 20-year-old Filipina needed two hours and 15 minutes to complete one of the biggest upsets of this year’s Championships, holding her nerve in a gripping first-set tie-break before taking complete control in the second set.
Swiatek, who arrived at the All England Club as one of the favourites after lifting the Venus Rosewater Dish last year, struggled to match Eala’s aggression and precision from the baseline.
It was another chapter in an intriguing rivalry that has quickly developed between the two players. Eala had stunned Swiatek in their maiden meeting at the Miami Open in 2025 before the Pole exacted revenge on clay in Madrid.
Their first-ever clash on grass, however, belonged entirely to the Filipina, whose flat groundstrokes and fearless approach repeatedly unsettled the defending champion.
“I don’t know how to describe it. I’m into the second week of a Grand Slam. It’s an amazing feeling. Iga is a phenomenal player and a wonderful person. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share Centre Court with her at Wimbledon,” Eala said.
“I’m very emotional right now. For someone like Iga, who has won so many Grand Slams, or legends like Serena and Venus, this achievement might seem small. But for someone who grew up in the Philippines, it means everything,” Eala added.
EALA SCRIPTS HISTORY FOR PHILIPPINES TENNIS
The victory was historic on multiple fronts. After becoming the first player from the Philippines to reach the third round of a Grand Slam earlier this week, Eala has now gone one better by becoming the first Filipino man or woman in the Open Era to reach the second week of a Grand Slam.
The win also improved her head-to-head record against Swiatek to 2-1 and marked her fifth victory over a top-10 opponent in 2026, underlining her emergence as one of the fastest-rising stars on the WTA Tour.
The opening set proved decisive, with both players saving multiple set points before Eala edged the marathon tie-break 11-9. Riding that momentum, she raced into a commanding lead in the second set, leaving Swiatek with little opportunity to mount a comeback.
Although the Pole briefly threatened to claw her way back into the contest, Eala stayed composed to close out the biggest win of her career.
Eala’s remarkable run at Wimbledon will continue in the fourth round, where she will face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, who booked her place with a commanding victory over Maria Sakkari.
With history already made and confidence soaring, Eala has become one of the standout stories of Wimbledon 2026, giving Philippine tennis another landmark moment on the sport’s grandest stage.
