For almost 90 minutes, Philadelphia belonged to Ecuador. The streets around the stadium were painted yellow and blue, the songs rarely stopped, and thousands of fans believed their side had done enough to begin the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a positive result.
Then Amad Diallo arrived with a reminder of football’s cruellest truth.

The Manchester United winger struck in the 90th minute to hand Ivory Coast a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador, silencing a stadium that had felt more like Quito than Philadelphia for much of the evening.
The result leaves the Elephants level on three points with Germany at the top of Group E after the four-time champions thrashed Curacao 7-1 earlier in the day. For Ecuador, it was a painful end to a match in which they struck the woodwork twice and spent long periods looking the more likely side to score.
The defeat was particularly harsh given the atmosphere their supporters created. Several thousand Ecuador fans had gathered at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Saturday before taking over large sections of the city on matchday. Hours before kickoff, yellow jerseys dominated the streets and parking lots surrounding the stadium. The support continued inside the ground, where Ecuador comfortably outnumbered the orange-clad Ivory Coast fans.
By full-time, however, football had delivered another reminder that atmosphere alone does not win matches.
AMAD DELIVERS THE FINAL BLOW
The match looked destined to become the first goalless draw of the tournament.
Ecuador had opportunities to avoid that outcome long before Amad’s winner. John Yeboah rattled the crossbar with a powerful strike in the 24th minute before Alan Minda repeated the feat just six minutes later. The South Americans carried the greater threat throughout the opening half and would have felt unfortunate not to head into the break with the lead.
Ivory Coast had their moments too.
Elye Wahi struck the woodwork in the second half, while Seko Fofana and Franck Kessie provided energy and physicality in midfield. Yet both sides continued to lack the finishing touch needed to separate themselves.
Just when the game appeared destined to end level, Wilfried Singo surged forward and picked out Amad on the edge of the box. The winger needed only one touch to create space before curling a precise finish into the corner and sparking wild celebrations among the Ivory Coast players.
IAN DIOMANDE SHINES BRIGHT
While Amad grabbed the decisive goal, much of Ivory Coast’s attacking spark came from Ian Diomande.
The youngster consistently troubled Ecuador’s defence and looked particularly dangerous when running directly at Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie. His pace and directness created several of Ivory Coast’s most promising moments.
His best opportunity arrived in the 58th minute when he brilliantly escaped two defenders before firing over from a promising position. Although he did not find the net, Diomande’s display offered another glimpse of why he is considered one of the brightest talents in this Ivory Coast side.
The victory gives Ivory Coast an early foothold in Group E and sets up a mouthwatering clash against Germany, who began their campaign with a commanding 7-1 win over Curacao. With both sides sitting on three points, their next meeting could go a long way towards deciding top spot in the group.
Ecuador, meanwhile, will be left wondering how they walked away empty-handed after striking the woodwork twice and carrying much of the attacking threat. Their focus now shifts to Curacao, where anything less than three points would place serious pressure on their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.
