Bangladesh defeated Australia by nine wickets in Darwin to script their first ever Test match win Down Under. But the scoreline, for all its clarity, cannot quite capture what happened. For a country that had waited more than two decades to return to Australia for a Test, this was more than a result. It was years of frustration, anticipation and longing finally finding somewhere to go.
They had not arrived as favourites. Far from it. Bangladesh had lost to Zimbabwe in their previous Test and, days before facing Australia, were bowled out for 54 against Cricket Australia XI in their warm-up match. Their preparations were further disrupted by the absence of fast bowler Nahid Rana and an injury to Shoriful Islam. At one point, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was even asked whether Bangladesh could survive for three or four days.
Then, against a full-strength Australia, everything changed.
Bangladesh did not sneak over the line or rely on one extraordinary session. They controlled the contest from the beginning, built a commanding first-innings lead and dismantled Australia again in the second innings before completing a 57-run chase with nine wickets in hand.
They had waited an eternity for the opportunity. It took only three and a half days to turn that wait into history.
LONG WAIT TURNED INTO A PIECE OF HISTORY
The last time Bangladesh played a Test in Australia was in 2003. They lost both matches on that tour, including an innings defeat in Darwin. More than two decades later, they returned to the country and produced a result few could have confidently predicted.
This was Bangladesh’s first Test victory on Australian soil and only their second win against Australia in the format. They also became only the third Asian team, after India and Pakistan, to win a Test in Australia.
The numbers tell the story. Australia were bowled out for 198, Bangladesh replied with 426 to take a 228-run lead, and Cameron Green’s 104 could only delay the inevitable as the hosts were dismissed for 284 in their second innings. Bangladesh reached the target in 14.2 overs.
There was no late Australian rescue act. Bangladesh simply kept finding answers.
For Raiyaan Ferdous, a young Bangladesh supporter living in Long Island, New York, that was what made the victory so extraordinary.
“I would say this win hits different because we have been able to defeat a cricketing giant like Australia in their own backyard.”
What impressed him most was that Bangladesh did not depend on one individual to produce something extraordinary.
“This time, it wasn’t like one or two players did something extraordinary and that got the job done. Since day one, from the very first session, we dominated Australia, which is truly unreal to believe.”
The turnaround was difficult to comprehend, particularly after Bangladesh’s struggles in the build-up. But once the Test began, the visitors looked like a side that belonged.
THE PERFORMANCES THAT CHANGED THE CONTEST
Bangladesh’s victory was built on contributions across departments rather than one standout display.
Hasan Mahmud set the tone with 6-55 in the first innings and followed it with three more wickets in the second. His nine-wicket match haul earned him the Player of the Match award and gave Bangladesh the breakthroughs they needed whenever Australia threatened to rebuild.
At the other end of the scorecard, Tanzid Hasan Tamim supplied the innings that transformed Bangladesh’s position. His 101 made him the first Bangladesh batter to score a Test century in Australia and provided the foundation for the visitors’ massive first-innings total.
Then came Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
After contributing 65 with the bat, Miraz returned to dismantle Australia’s second innings with a five-wicket haul. His spell ended the hosts’ hopes of setting Bangladesh a challenging target.
The achievement was historic. Miraz became the first Bangladesh spinner to take five wickets in a Test innings in Australia.
The feat becomes even more striking when considering the visiting spinners who have bowled in Australia over the years. The likes of Muttiah Muralitharan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh, Ravindra Jadeja and Yasir Shah failed to claim a five-wicket haul in a Test innings Down Under.
It does not make Miraz a greater spinner than any of them. It simply underlines the difficulty of the feat.
Bangladesh had found the right combination at the right time: Hasan’s pace, Tanzid’s batting and Miraz’s control and penetration. Together, they turned a promising position into a historic result.
THE OLD BANGLADESH WAS STILL THERE
For supporters, however, Darwin was about more than a scorecard. It was about memory.
Shakib Al Hasan. Tamim Iqbal. Mashrafe Mortaza. Mushfiqur Rahim. Mahmudullah.
That generation made Bangladesh cricket part of daily life for millions. Their victories shaped childhoods, friendships and family conversations. As those players gradually moved away, the relationship between supporters and the team inevitably evolved.
Prokhor Sikdar, a supporter from Cumilla, believes the magnitude of the Darwin victory is impossible to ignore.
“Today’s win is not just a Test cricket victory. Most probably, across all formats, this is one of the biggest wins in Bangladesh cricket’s history. Beating a full-strength Australian team in a Test on Australian soil is a huge achievement.”
But he also acknowledged that the emotion surrounding the current team is different from what it was during the previous generation.
“We had a different kind of emotional connection with the generation of Shakib, Tamim, Mashrafe, Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah. As they gradually moved away… the fire we had for Bangladesh cricket perhaps wasn’t quite the same anymore. We are slowly getting used to the new generation.”
The passion, however, never disappeared. It simply changed shape.
WHEN CELEBRATION MEANS RETURNING TO THE PAST
For Prokhor, the final day was supposed to be a working Sunday. As a freelancer, he had urgent work planned. Then Bangladesh beat Australia.
“After this win, though, I don’t feel like working anymore. I feel like spending the day with Bangladesh cricket.”
His celebration was not going to involve a restaurant or a large gathering. He wanted to revisit the moments that had shaped his love for the team.
“I’ll watch some of the old highlights again. I’ll watch the Cardiff win over Australia. I’ll watch Ashraful’s innings. I’ll revisit some of our other special wins and special moments.”
There is a fitting connection between Ashraful and this new chapter.
In 2005, Ashraful’s famous century against Australia in Cardiff helped Bangladesh produce one of the greatest upsets in their history. More than two decades later, he is part of the national team’s coaching staff, while Tanzid has emerged as the latest Bangladesh batter to score a match-winning century against Australia.
The old memories have not disappeared. They have simply found new company.
WHEN A VICTORY BECOMES SOMETHING BIGGER
Senior Bangladesh journalist Shanto Mahmud called it the greatest Test victory in the country’s history.
He described the emotion that a result of this magnitude can create.
“Some victories are so special that you forget how you are supposed to celebrate. You sing, you run, you throw your hands in the air and do whatever your heart tells you.”
For him, Darwin represents a significant step in Bangladesh’s Test journey. The team had already demonstrated its ability to win important matches overseas, including the famous victory over New Zealand at Mount Maunganui in 2022. Now they had crossed another barrier.
Sri Lanka have never won a Test in Australia, while Pakistan’s most recent Test victory there came in 1995. Bangladesh have now joined a very exclusive group.
Senior journalist Ariful Islam Roney believes the result carries an even deeper significance because of what cricket means to the people of Bangladesh.
“Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the best win in the history of Bangladeshi cricket.”
He sees the sport as a source of happiness in a country where people are often dealing with difficult circumstances.
“Cricket has always been the biggest source of laughter and joy for the people. Despite all this, people will smile at this win, and forget all the problems of life, at least for a while.”
That is why a Test match played thousands of kilometres away can suddenly feel so close to home.
For a few hours, the result became the only thing that mattered.
THE SACRIFICE BEHIND THE SCENES
Not every contribution to this victory appears on the scorecard.
Taskin Ahmed had the opportunity to play in the Lanka Premier League but chose not to risk an injury at a time when Bangladesh’s pace department was already stretched.
Hasan Mahmud travelled to the LPL but returned before the tournament ended when Bangladesh needed him.
And Ebadot Hossain was in Italy with his wife as they prepared to welcome their child when Bangladesh called. He returned to join the national team, cutting short his paternity leave.
These decisions did not produce runs or wickets, but they showed how much this Test meant to the players and the team management. They were determined to make the opportunity count.
BANGLADESH NEED TO DOUBLE DOWN
The temptation after a victory like this is to believe the story is complete. It is not.
Australia can still respond in Mackay. Bangladesh could lose the second Test heavily. One historic victory does not suddenly make them the dominant force in world Test cricket.
But that misses the larger point. The barrier has been broken.
Bangladesh now know they can beat Australia in Australia. The next step is ensuring they do not have to wait another generation to test that belief again.
Regular tours of Australia would give Bangladesh the experience of playing at Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. More importantly, they would allow their players to understand these conditions and build on what they achieved in Darwin.
That is the legacy this victory can create. Not simply a famous result, but a change in expectation.
Raiyaan captured that transformation perfectly.
“To come back from that and make such a statement in the cricketing world is just a surreal feeling, not just for me or the Bangladeshi fans, but, I would say, for cricket fans all over the world.”
For the generation that grew up watching Shakib, Tamim and Mashrafe, Darwin is now another memory to treasure.
And for the younger generation, it is proof that Australia is not an impenetrable.
Bangladesh came to Darwin carrying the weight of doubts. They leave carrying belief.
And perhaps that is what matters most.
Not just the memory of beating Australia. The belief that they can do it again.
