A Conservative mayor has been expelled from the party after allegedly making antisemitic remarks, Sky News understands.

A complaint against Councillor Atiqul Hoque – who represents the ward of St Edmund’s on Salisbury City Council – is understood to have been made on Wednesday to the Salisbury Conservative Association.

The complaint alleged the local authority’s mayor made “offensive and inappropriate comments” on both social media and WhatsApp.

Now Sky News understands Mr Hoque has been kicked out of the party as a result – as first reported by the BBC.

The councillor has served as mayor of the council since May 2023, and has been a member of both the environment and climate committees at the authority and the Salisbury neighbourhood development plan steering group.

Sky News has contacted Mr Hoque and the Conservative Party for comment.
