Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman lost his cool with reporters after being questioned over his defensive tactics following the team’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 exit against Morocco. Koeman’s side were knocked out after another painful penalty shootout defeat, losing 3-2 from the spot after a 1-1 draw following extra time.
The Dutch media questioned whether it was necessary to deploy a back five – a tactical switch that many felt suppressed the natural attacking identity traditionally associated with Dutch football. Koeman, however, strongly defended his methods and insisted he would make the exact same decision again.
Netherlands vs Morocco, FIFA World Cup: Highlights
The Netherlands coach rejected suggestions that his side approached the game with fear against Morocco and argued that the tactical adjustment was designed to improve defensive balance rather than compromise ambition.
Koeman made no apologies for fielding five defenders, even while acknowledging that criticism would follow after elimination.
“With this defensive approach, we gave away much less than we did during the group matches,” Koeman said after the game.
“That was positive, but also we were less offensive.”
The Dutch manager argued that Morocco posed a far greater challenge than the teams Netherlands had previously faced in the tournament and said the tactical shift reflected that reality.
“You can think of the tactics whatever you like, but we gave away much less against a team much stronger than Sweden and Tunisia. And if I had to do it again, I would do it the same way again,” he said.
Koeman also suggested that the reaction would have been very different had Netherlands held onto their lead late in the game.
“I also know that if Morocco hadn’t equalised with that late goal, there would be all sorts of compliments for me as the Dutch coach. But now, probably, I’m going to be scolded for the fact that I chose five defenders.”
‘YOU WATCH FOOTBALL FROM SIDELINES’
The coach revealed that the approach had been discussed with the players beforehand and insisted the squad had backed the plan.
“You will criticise me, and that’s your right, but you watch football from the sidelines,” Koeman said in a tense exchange with reporters.
“I’m with the team. I knew what needed to be improved. This is how I improved it. And once again, if I had to do it again, I would have done exactly the same.”
Koeman became increasingly animated when asked whether the set-up reflected caution against Morocco.
“It was not about being afraid. That’s not what it was about at all. Why afraid? I mean, we had three strikers on the field,” he said.
“This is about a better defensive position, not out of fear, but based on an analysis of the opposition, and we can keep discussing this until tomorrow evening.”
“You have your opinion, with all due respect, that’s fine. But I have a different view.”
Koeman added that he would take time before deciding on his future with the national team after another World Cup campaign ended in disappointment.
Morocco progressed to the Round of 16 and will face Canada in Houston on Saturday.
