Formula E CEO Jeffrey Dodds in a recent interview backed Max Verstappen to win the upcoming 2024 Formula 1 season. Dodds went on to claim that if any of the other 19 drivers on the current F1 grid manage to beat the Red Bull posterboy, he’ll donate $250,000 or about Rs 2.07 crore in Indian currency to the charity of the choice of the winner.
“99% he [Max Verstappen] gets that trophy. If he doesn’t win it, if any of the other 19 drivers wins it, we’ll give a quarter of a million dollars to the charity of choice of the other driver that wins it.” He added that it obviously wouldn’t be “the worst day in the office” to give a load of money to charity, but [Verstappen] is “nailed on to win”.
To brush your memory a little, the 2023 Formula 1 season was, hands-down, the most dominant year ever for Red Bull – who managed to win all but one Grand Prix races held over the season. Apart from adding a third drivers’ championship trophy, Verstappen managed to beat a ton of other Formula 1 records, including most wins in a year, most podium positions in a year, most consecutive wins in a year, biggest championship winning margin, to name a few.
Red Bull seems set to replicate their winning ways in 2024 as well. However, with an increasingly competitive field, the Milton Keynes-based squad will not be resting on their laurels. Verstappen had previously spoken about the RB19 (2023 car) struggling on street tracks – an area that the team will look to work on this year.
Do you think that any of the other 19 drivers can challenge Max Verstappen for the 2024 Formula 1 drivers’ championship? Tell us in the comments down below.
