On Day 2, Professor Arvind Panagariya will talk on the topic, ‘The Economic Whisperer, How to Fuel Growth with Jobs’. Panagariya, a prominent figure in Indian economics and policy, has taken on a significant position at Columbia University. He has been appointed as the Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy and a Professor of Economics at the esteemed university.

Prior to joining Columbia University, Professor Panagariya held key positions within the Government of India. From January 2015 to August 2017, he served as the inaugural vice chairman of the NITI Aayog, a policy think tank, where he held the rank equivalent to that of a Cabinet Minister. His tenure coincided with India’s representation at the G20 summits, during which he served as India’s G20 Sherpa and led negotiations for the G20 Communiqués under the presidencies of Turkey (2015), China (2016), and Germany (2017).

With a distinguished career spanning several decades, Professor Panagariya’s contributions extend beyond academia. He previously served as the Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank and was a faculty member in the Department of Economics at the University of Maryland at College Park from 1978 to 2003. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with prestigious international organizations including the World Bank, IMF, and UNCTAD.
