Rajasthan Royals completed the IPL 2026 playoffs lineup with a crucial win over Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, joining Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the top four after a dramatic final day of league-stage action.
RR’s victory in the afternoon fixture confirmed their qualification and ended the hopes of Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. The Royals climbed to 16 points with the win, moving ahead of Punjab, who had finished their campaign on 15 points after defeating Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday. KKR, despite still having one league game left against Delhi Capitals on Sunday night, could only reach a maximum of 15 points and were officially knocked out.
The IPL 2026 playoffs will begin with Qualifier 1 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans in Dharamsala on May 26. The two teams finished first and second respectively in the points table, and the winner of the clash will advance directly to the final in Ahmedabad on May 31.
MI vs RR: Highlights | Scorecard
The loser of Qualifier 1 will still have another shot at reaching the title clash but will have little time to recover, travelling from Dharamsala to New Chandigarh for Qualifier 2 on May 29.
Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals, who ended the league stage in third and fourth place respectively, will meet in the Eliminator on May 27 in New Chandigarh. The stakes in that fixture are straightforward: the loser exits the tournament, while the winner progresses to Qualifier 2 to face the loser of RCB vs GT for a place in the final.
With just a day separating Qualifier 2 and the final, the second finalist will travel to Ahmedabad on May 30 before the summit clash on May 31.
The qualification race had tightened considerably after Punjab Kings kept themselves alive with a win over Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday. Punjab’s victory meant RR needed to beat Mumbai Indians to avoid leaving the door open for KKR, who were depending on multiple results to go their way.
A Rajasthan defeat would have turned the final league game between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals into a high-pressure contest, with KKR needing to chase down DC’s target inside 12 overs to overhaul RR on net run rate. But the Royals ensured there would be no late drama.
RR earned their playoff berth with a performance that showcased both composure and character. On a sluggish Wankhede surface, Rajasthan found themselves under pressure early after losing both openers cheaply and struggling to generate momentum through the middle overs.
It was then that Jofra Archer stepped up with a stunning all-round contribution. Promoted down the order, Archer changed the tempo of the innings with a fearless cameo that lifted Rajasthan to a competitive total on a pitch where strokeplay was not straightforward.
Mumbai Indians threatened during the chase through Suryakumar Yadav, Will Jacks and Hardik Pandya. Suryakumar once again anchored the innings with authority, while Hardik counterattacked aggressively to briefly revive MI’s hopes. But RR stayed ahead for most of the contest, controlling the game with disciplined bowling and sharp execution in key moments.
The result capped a disappointing season for Mumbai Indians, who remained ninth in the standings ahead of Lucknow Super Giants. Both sides finished IPL 2026 with just four wins from 14 matches.
Attention now shifts to the Eliminator in New Chandigarh, where Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals will clash in what promises to be one of the standout games of the season. Hyderabad’s explosive opening combination of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma will go up against a confident Rajasthan side that has gathered momentum at the right stage of the tournament.
