Vaibhav Sooryavanshi added yet another record to his extraordinary IPL 2026 season during Rajasthan Royals’ Qualifier 2 clash against Gujarat Titans, becoming the first batter in T20 history to score 500 runs in the powerplay of a single tournament. The 15-year-old reached the milestone in Mullanpur while continuing a campaign that has already rewritten several batting records.

The latest milestone comes just days after the teenager smashed a breathtaking 97 off 29 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator, an innings that left him only three runs short of the fastest century in IPL history.

GT vs RR, Qualifier 2: UPDATES | SCORECARD

The 15-year-old reached the landmark during RR’s innings in Mullanpur, moving past some of the most explosive opening seasons ever seen in T20 cricket. Before Sooryavanshi’s feat, the record belonged to David Warner, who scored 467 powerplay runs for Sunrisers Hyderabad during their title-winning IPL 2016 campaign

Most powerplay runs in a single T20 tournament:

  • Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (RR, IPL 2026) – 500+ runs
  • David Warner (SRH, IPL 2016) – 467 runs
  • Travis Head (SRH, IPL 2024) – 402 runs
  • Sai Sudharsan (GT, IPL 2025) – 402 runs
  • Adam Gilchrist (Deccan Chargers, IPL 2009) – 382 runs

HOW SOORYAVANSHI REACHED THE 500-RUN MARK

Unlike many of his innings this season, the start against Gujarat Titans was far from straightforward.

Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada appeared to have done their homework on the teenager, repeatedly testing him with disciplined lines and lengths during the opening overs. For perhaps the first time in several matches, Sooryavanshi was forced to spend time at the crease before unleashing his attacking game.

His first six did not arrive until the 13th ball he faced.

GT’s strategy was clear. After watching Sooryavanshi dismantle SRH with a 29-ball 97 in the Eliminator, Gujarat’s primary objective was to deny him momentum inside the powerplay.

The plan looked promising early on.

Rajasthan Royals also suffered setbacks at the other end, losing Yashasvi Jaiswal for 1 and Dhruv Jurel for 7 inside the opening overs. But Sooryavanshi remained unfazed.

The turning point arrived in the third over against Siraj.

With RR under pressure, the teenager counterattacked, collecting 21 runs from the over and immediately shifting the momentum back towards Rajasthan. Two boundaries off the final two deliveries of the over helped him bring up the landmark of 500 powerplay runs for the season.

At the time of writing, Sooryavanshi had reached 34 off 20 balls. By his own extraordinary standards, it was a relatively measured start. Yet even on a day when Gujarat Titans managed to keep him quieter than most teams have this season, the teenager still found a way to create history.
