Delhi Capitals are back to square one. A strong auction had given them one of the most balanced squads on paper, but baffling selection calls, Axar Patel’s inconsistent captaincy and an inability to read conditions at home have dragged them back into must-win territory once again.
Nothing has worked consistently for DC this season. Flat pitches have not guaranteed victories, difficult surfaces have exposed their batting, big totals have slipped away, and collapses have become an alarming pattern. With their IPL 2026 campaign now hanging by a thread, Delhi head into Friday’s clash against Kolkata Knight Riders knowing there is no room left for another mistake.
For both teams, the playoff race is still alive only in theory. The reality is far harsher. Another defeat could leave either side staring at elimination. When Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders meet at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday, it will be about far more than just two points. It will be about survival.
There is no margin for error left now. One more slip-up could effectively shut the door on the season for either side, and only one team is likely to walk away from Friday’s clash still feeling in control of its playoff destiny.
Delhi Capitals are seventh on the table with eight points from 10 matches and must win all four of their remaining games to stay in contention for the playoffs. KKR are only slightly better placed in eighth with seven points from nine matches.
The biggest difference between the two sides at the moment is momentum. After stumbling badly at the start of the season, Kolkata have finally found some rhythm and arrive in Delhi on the back of three straight wins. Their poor start has left them with almost no breathing space, but there is at least a sense that they are building momentum at the right time. KKR still need to win all five of its remaining matches to reach 17 points and remain alive in the playoff race.
Delhi, meanwhile, still look like a side searching for clarity. That uncertainty is expected to shape one of the biggest decisions ahead of Friday’s game: the pitch.
VARUN, NARINE TEST FOR DC
Delhi Capitals have every reason to be wary of KKR’s dangerous spin duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy heading into Friday’s must-win clash.
So concerned are DC about the threat posed by the two spinners that they are expected to opt for a batting-friendly surface at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, most likely Pitch No. 6, the same strip on which they piled up 264 against Punjab Kings and still somehow ended up losing.
The decision says plenty about Delhi’s current state of mind. More than anything, it reflects a batting line-up that has looked increasingly vulnerable whenever conditions have offered even the slightest assistance to bowlers.
Against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a hint of seam movement triggered a dramatic collapse as DC crashed to 9 for 6. On slower surfaces where the ball gripped and held up, the batting looked equally uncomfortable against quality spin from Rashid Khan, Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmed.
That is precisely why Narine and Varun loom as Delhi’s biggest concern heading into Friday’s contest.
Narine has once again controlled the middle overs with relentless accuracy, while Varun continues to strike regularly even on batting-friendly tracks. Against that kind of spin attack, Delhi’s middle order featuring Pathum Nissanka, Sameer Rizvi and Karun Nair could once again come under serious pressure.
KULDEEP’S FORM A WORRY
Delhi’s problems do not stop with the batting. Kuldeep Yadav, usually one of their biggest match-winners, is enduring a rare off-season. The left-arm wrist-spinner, whose overall IPL economy rate has traditionally hovered around eight, has gone at more than 10 runs an over this season while managing only seven wickets in 10 matches.
Kuldeep’s dip in form has hurt DC more than expected because there has been no reliable fallback option in the bowling attack. As a result, Delhi’s safest route now appears to be preparing a flat deck, trying to outscore opponents and then hoping the fast bowlers can somehow close out the game at the death. That responsibility is likely to rest on Mitchell Starc and Lungi Ngidi, who is recovering after suffering a concussion against Punjab Kings.
THE BATTING CONUNDRUM
Ironically, KKR’s biggest weakness this season has also been their top order. Captain Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi have both had moments, but neither has consistently dominated attacks early in the innings. Too often, Kolkata have been left trying to rebuild instead of taking control.
Rinku Singh has been the clear exception. Much of KKR’s success this season has come from his calm finishing and ability to absorb pressure in tense situations. Their continued survival in the playoff race, however, owes just as much to the bowling attack, especially Narine and Varun, who have kept delivering wickets throughout the season.
Delhi’s batting issues, meanwhile, run much deeper. KL Rahul has carried the side for large parts of the tournament, scoring heavily at a strike rate far better than anything he has managed in previous IPL seasons. But in a year where players like Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi have pushed the boundaries of T20 batting with strike rates above 200, even Rahul’s numbers have not been enough to transform DC’s fortunes.
Questions around selection have only added to the scrutiny. The continued backing of Pathum Nissanka despite limited returns has raised eyebrows, especially with David Miller being benched twice to accommodate the Sri Lankan batter. Karun Nair’s struggles, meanwhile, have carried from the practice nets into matches, while Abhishek Porel has received just one opportunity. Nitish Rana, despite all his experience, has also repeatedly looked vulnerable against the short ball.
DC vs KKR: DELHI PITCH AND CONDITIONS
The Arun Jaitley Stadium has traditionally favoured batters, but recent matches have offered plenty for bowlers too. Delhi Capitals were bundled out for 75 here by Royal Challengers Bengaluru after Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood ran riot, while Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein starred with the ball for Chennai Super Kings in the last game. Chasing has also been the preferred route to success, with four of the five matches this season won by teams batting second.
