And he returned in fine fashion. Rohit Sharma’s comeback to the Mumbai Indians top order proved to be the defining move of the day. There were other talking points, including Hardik Pandya’s illness potentially opening the door for Suryakumar Yadav to lead the side, but when Rohit’s bat does the talking, everything else fades into the background.

With this stand, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton climbed to the top of the list for the most 100-plus partnerships for the Mumbai Indians in IPL history, becoming only the second pair to register three century stands together. Rohit’s presence on this list is hardly surprising. This is his second feature on the list with two 100-plus partnerships with former MI batter Ishan Kishan also there, underlining his long-standing impact at the top of the order. Interestingly, Rickelton had scored a sensational century, the last time he batted at this venue, even though it came in a losing cause. Although neither batter remained till the end, their efforts had already done the heavy lifting. They laid a rock-solid platform for the middle order, ensuring that the required rate never spiralled out of control. The chase, which could have been tricky under pressure, was turned into a manageable task, allowing MI’s batters to close out the game with relative ease. It was his 49th half-century in the Indian Premier League, and he reached the milestone in just 27 balls. “Rohit and Rickelton had a great start,” Naman Dhir said after the game. “Today it came off. He’s a great player (on Rohit), we’ve seen that over the years. We had a setback because of his hamstring, but the way he came back was incredible.”
MI GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS
With the top order laying a near-perfect foundation through a 143-run opening stand, MI chased down the daunting 229-run target set by Lucknow Super Giants with six wickets in hand. While the openers did the bulk of the scoring, it was Naman Dhir who ensured there were no late hiccups, guiding the team over the line with eight balls to spare. His composure in the closing stages reflected the confidence instilled by the strong start.
This victory, while crucial, only marginally improves MI’s position on the points table, where they remain second from bottom. However, reaching six points gives them a fighting chance as the league phase progresses. The road to the playoffs remains steep, and MI will require not only consistent performances but also favourable results elsewhere.
Still, this win could prove to be a turning point. With Rohit Sharma back in the lineup and firing, Mumbai Indians have regained a sense of direction and belief. Whether that translates into a late surge for the playoffs remains to be seen, but for now, they have kept their campaign alive—and perhaps, just perhaps, reignited hope among their fans.
