Tata Motors targets top safety ratings for next-gen Tiago & Tigor, emphasizing six airbags. Proactive stance aligns with evolving standards.

Tata Motors, a leading automobile company, is stepping up its efforts to ensure safer rides for customers.

Mohan Savarkar, the Chief Product Officer of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, highlighted the company’s commitment to safety, tracing back to 1997 when they established a crash test lab in Pune, even before launching the Indica.

Looking forward, the homegrown automaker is targeting a 5-star safety rating from the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP) for their next-gen Tiago and Tigor models. Savarkar stressed the importance of having six airbags as standard to achieve this goal, as reported by Autocar.

While Tata’s recent SUVs come with six airbags as standard, entry-level models like the Tiago and Tigor are due for upgrades, including enhanced safety features like six airbags.

India’s safety regulations are evolving, with talks of making six airbags mandatory in all new cars shifting towards a voluntary approach under BNCAP. This change reflects Tata Motors’ proactive approach to meeting evolving safety standards and customer needs.

In addition to passive safety measures, Tata Motors is focusing on active safety systems to prevent accidents. Savarkar highlights Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as a crucial step towards Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA).

India’s road safety landscape is complex, with factors like better road infrastructure and higher city speeds emphasizing the need for safer vehicles. Public awareness about road safety practices is also growing. Savarkar noted the changing consumer mindset, where safety is a key consideration, especially with the rising popularity of SUVs.

The new generation Tiago and Tigor are expected to undergo significant changes, including a new platform and updated design elements. Along with these changes, customers can anticipate a host of new features and additional safety measures.
