Former India captain Virat Kohli has firmly shut down any lingering speculation regarding a potential return to Test cricket, reiterating that his retirement from the longest format of the game remains absolute.
The prolific batsman, who abruptly stepped away from Tests last year, clarified his stance during a brand promotional event on Sunday, June 21. Speaking at the launch of a new sports apparel line, Kohli dismissed the growing public clamour for a comeback with his trademark candidness when questioned about a recently advertised footwear product.
The event took a revealing turn when the host, Danish Sait, pointed out a deliberate marketing detail regarding a popular red shoe from his brand. The shoes had been priced at exactly Rs 9,230, a direct tribute to Kohli’s final career tally of 9,230 Test runs. Sait jokingly asked whether the icon would consider reversing his retirement decision to score more runs, thereby forcing the brand to raise the price and generate more revenue.
Kohli laughed off the suggestion but offered a definitive response that left no room for ambiguity. He stated that he would rather undersell the product than come out of retirement, confirming that he is well and truly finished with Test cricket.
“I would rather undersell. I am done with it,” Kohli said with a smile, as the video of the interaction went viral.
The public frenzy was further heightened by the clever marketing strategy behind the prior shoe pricing. Cricket enthusiasts across the country had interpreted the figure as a nostalgic hint towards an unfulfilled red-ball legacy. Even though Kohli had addressed his Test future in the past, there was constant speculation that the star batter might have a few more matches in the longest format in him.
However, Kohli’s brief yet emphatic declaration has firmly lowered the curtain on one of the most celebrated Test careers in modern cricket history. Having revolutionised India’s pace-bowling culture and led the nation to a historic maiden series victory in Australia, the veteran batsman appears entirely content with his decision to step away.
The absolute suddenness of the exit remains a point of intense discussion. Having demonstrated his enduring commitment to the red-ball format by returning to domestic cricket with the Ranji Trophy for the first time in twelve years, and with every indication pointing towards his availability for the subsequent high-profile tour of England,
Kohli completely caught the cricketing fraternity off guard by walking away midway through the Indian Premier League season last year.
The unexpected decision was contextualised earlier this year when Kohli broke his silence on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru podcast. In a candid admission, he stated that he no longer possessed the desire to operate within an environment where he felt he was constantly required to prove his worth despite his monumental legacy, affirming that he would only continue to play in spaces where his value was mutually respected and wanted.
Sources close to the player suggest that Kohli remains focused on managing his physical conditioning to prolong his career exclusively in One Day Internationals, having already retired from both Tests and Twenty20 internationals.
Having recently sustained a hamstring injury during the 2026 Indian Premier League final while guiding the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their second successive title, Kohli was forced to miss the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, which concluded on Saturday.
The 37-year-old has now been included in the 15-player squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series in England this July. However, his participation remains subject to a fitness clearance test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. By limiting his international exposure solely to the 50-over format, the veteran batsman aims to maintain the elite physical standards required to anchor the national team through to the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
