Iga Swiatek’s Wuhan Open campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion as the six-time Grand Slam champion broke down in tears while battling a painful left-leg injury during her semi-final defeat to compatriot Maja Chwalinska on Saturday. Swiatek struggled to move freely around the court and eventually went down 5-7, 1-6, bringing her impressive run in Wuhan to an abrupt end.
The former world No. 1 was visibly hampered by the injury as the opening set approached its conclusion. Trailing 5-6, Swiatek called for a medical timeout as she struggled with pain in her left thigh. The Pole received treatment before returning to the court with her thigh bandaged, but the physical discomfort continued to affect her movement.
Swiatek found it increasingly difficult to put pressure on her injured leg and chase down Chwalinska’s returns. The usually relentless baseliner, known for her speed and ability to cover the court, was unable to move with her customary freedom.
The emotional toll of the situation was evident as Swiatek broke down in tears while receiving treatment. The sight of the six-time major winner struggling to cope with the pain made for a heartbreaking moment, particularly given the significance of the all-Polish clash.
Despite her physical struggles, Swiatek chose to continue fighting rather than walk away from the match. However, Chwalinska capitalised on her opponent’s limited mobility to take control of the contest.
CHWALINSKA TAKES ADVANTAGE AS SWIATEK STRUGGLES
Chwalinska held her nerve to close out the first set 7-5 before dominating the second 6-1. She continued to put Swiatek under pressure, forcing the injured star to cover the court and making it increasingly difficult for her to recover between points.
The victory sent Chwalinska into the Wuhan Open final, marking a significant milestone in her career. The Polish player will face Britain’s Sonay Kartal in the championship match. Kartal booked her place in the final by defeating Jelena Ostapenko 7-6(9), 7-6(5).
The result was especially poignant given the history between the two players. Swiatek and Chwalinska have known each other since their junior days and were once doubles partners, making the semi-final a special occasion for Polish tennis.
Chwalinska had spoken warmly about their longstanding connection ahead of the match, describing a relationship that stretched back to the beginning of their tennis journeys.
For Swiatek, the defeat was a painful end to a promising Wuhan campaign. Her immediate priority will be assessing the left-leg injury and determining how it affects her upcoming schedule.
