Pat Cummins had no interest in getting drawn into the debate over England’s Bazball era, delivering a brutally cold response when asked about its apparent demise ahead of Australia’s two-match Test series against Najmul Hossain Shanto’s Bangladesh.
“Pat, Bazball is apparently dead and buried now. Got any insights into how you were able to kill it off and what the future of English cricket will look like now?” a reporter asked Cummins during his pre-match press conference.
“Uh, no. Don’t really care,” Cummins responded.
The Australian captain was speaking ahead of the first Test against Bangladesh, which begins in Darwin on August 13. The series marks the start of Australia’s new Test campaign, with Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon reunited in the side.
Cummins’ brief response came at an interesting moment for English Test cricket. The Bazball era, which began in 2022 under captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum, has effectively reached its end after both figures stepped away from their respective roles this year.
HOW MCCULLUM AND STOKES FLOURISHED IN BAZBALL ERA
McCullum and Stokes inherited an England side that had won just one of their previous 17 Tests. Their answer was to create a fearless environment in which players were encouraged to attack, take risks and keep pushing for victory rather than being paralysed by the possibility of defeat.
The transformation was immediate, with England producing a remarkable 3-0 series victory over New Zealand in their first assignment under the duo. Across McCullum’s four-year tenure, England won 27 Tests and drew two, although they failed to win either an Ashes series or a Test series in India.
The approach eventually came under greater scrutiny after England’s Ashes struggles. McCullum stepped down as Test head coach in July, while Stokes had announced his retirement from international cricket shortly beforehand.
England have now entered a new chapter under captain Joe Root and incoming head coach Stephen Fleming. Whether the team retains Bazball’s attacking principles or adopts a more measured approach remains to be seen.
For Cummins, however, the focus will be firmly on Bangladesh as Australia look to strengthen their position at the top of the World Test Championship 2025-27 points table. They currently have 84 points and a points percentage of 87.50, having won seven of their eight matches.
