Like many people, I’ve accumulated an impressive arsenal of masks, oils, and bond-repair treatments in my never-ending pursuit of stronger, shinier hair. But when stress, pollution, hormonal fluctuations, heat styling, and everyday life leave hair brittle, dull, and prone to breakage, there’s only so much a topical treatment can do. Sometimes, the answer may need to come from the inside out.

When my trusted pharmacist suggested I try bamboo extract supplements, I was immediately intrigued. After all, I’ve long admired the ancient plant—lush, vibrant, remarkably resilient—but I had no idea it could even be used in supplement form. In fact, this symbol of longevity in China is prized for the very qualities we tend to want from our hair: strength, flexibility, and shine.

Why bamboo?

Growing primarily throughout tropical and subtropical regions, the giant, fast-growing grass has been woven into Asian art, architecture, medicine, and everyday life for centuries. Today, bamboo forests are destinations in their own right: The ethereal Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of Kyoto’s most recognizable sights, while China’s vast Anji Bamboo Forest provided the spectacular backdrop for an iconic fight scene in the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

But bamboo’s appeal extends beyond its natural beauty. The plant is famously strong and flexible—as Bruce Lee famously said, “bamboo survives by bending with the wind”—characteristics that are thanks in part to its high silica content. It’s also precisely this component that has made bamboo extract increasingly popular in the beauty and wellness worlds.

What is bamboo extract?

Derived from the stems and leaves of the evergreen plant, bamboo extract—which is sometimes referred to by its scientific name, Bambusa vulgaris or simply bamboo silica—contains a variety of naturally occurring compounds, including minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants like flavonoids. Of particular note is silica, a naturally occurring compound containing silicon, an element that plays a role in the body’s connective tissues and has been studied for its potential benefits for skin. In fact, some bamboo extracts can contain up to 70% organic silica.

“Bamboo extract promotes hair growth thanks to its high silicon content, which is known to strengthen the hair shaft and reduce breakage,” says Shabir Daya, pharmacist and co-founder of Victoria Health. Recently, the company created a supplement formulated with bamboo extract and biotin for its proprietary DoSe brand.

The compound doesn’t just improve hair strength. “Silicon is known to promote collagen production in the body, thereby helping to increase hair thickness,” Daya says. “Since silicon binds to other minerals, it helps nourish the scalp and plays a beneficial role in the health of the skin, hair, and nails.”

The benefits of bamboo extract for hair

It makes sense that the same compound that helps make bamboo so strong and resilient could possibly do the same for our hair. At least, that’s the idea behind the growing popularity of bamboo extract in both supplements and topical hair-care products. The potential benefits include:

  • Helping strengthen the hair shaft and reduce breakage
  • Supporting the production of collagen and keratin
  • Providing antioxidant protection against environmental stressors
  • Supporting the health of the scalp and hair follicles
  • Helping hair feel stronger, more elastic, and resilient
  • Smoothing the hair cuticle for a shinier, silkier appearance and less frizz
  • Helping protect hair from some of the oxidative stress associated with pollution, UV exposure, and heat styling
