Swedish automaker Volvo has announced a new naming strategy for its XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge EVs. The company has dropped the ‘Recharge’ suffix and the XC40 and C40 will be simply called EX40 and EC40, respectively. The renaming of the two EVs is expected to be implemented on the India-spec models soon.

Volvo has revealed that the model renaming is part of its transition towards becoming a fully EV maker by 2030 and it is also to bring it in line with its EV line-up including the EX30, EX90 and the EM90.The company has also renamed the plug-in-hybrid models, they are now denoted by the ‘T6’ or ‘T8’ suffix to indicate different levels of power output.

Along with the change of names, the EX40 and EC40 also get a new Performance software package which puts out an additional 34 PS. Existing Volvo owners can activate the Performance upgrade using the Volvo app and the company has not revealed the impact of the power bump on the range of both cars. The single-motor variants of the EX40 and EC40 will have a maximum range of 577km and 583km, respectively.

The company also announced the Black Edition for the EX40 and the EC40. It features an exclusive Onyx Black exterior shade with a few bespoke design touches, more details will be revealed later. In India Volvo offers XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge priced from Rs 58 lakh and 63 lakh (both prices Ex-showroom), respectively.

Both EVs are based on the CMA platform (Compact Modular Architecture) and in India the C40 Recharge and the XC40 Recharge get a dual-motor set-up – one on each axle – paired with a 78kWh battery pack. The C40 Recharge has a claimed range of 530km on a single charge on the WLTP cycle whereas the the XC40 Recharge has a 418 Km range.
