The 428-km Leh-Manali Nationwide Freeway was reopened by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for vehicular visitors after the arterial street remained closed for almost 5 months on Wednesday. The NH was closed on account of heavy snowfall throughout winter and snow accumulation.

The freeway was closed in November with the onset of winter and snow accumulation. The street is an alternate route connecting the Union Territory of Ladakh with the remainder of the nation by means of Himachal Pradesh. 

A Leh-based defence spokesperson mentioned the street was opened for vehicular visitors by the BRO after the completion of the snow clearance operation.

“This difficult operation commenced from two extremities by two totally different snow clearance groups, working concurrently and in sync, comprising extremely expert manpower and state-of-the-art machines.


Mission Deepak undertook the operation from Manali to Sarchu (border of Ladakh and Himachal) and Mission Himank clearing the freeway from Leh to Sarchu,” the spokesperson added.

He mentioned the groups labored in extraordinarily difficult situations battling snow storms and treacherous climate situations of high-altitude areas, clearing the nationwide freeway and negotiating 4 essential passes, together with the Baralacha La (15,910 ft), Nakee La (15,547 ft), Lachung La (16,616 ft) and Tanglang La (17,482 ft).
