What makes a championship-winning team?
Some will point to star power. Others will talk about match-winners, tactics or performances under pressure. All of those matter. But the foundation of every great team is usually something less tangible: culture.
That was perhaps the biggest takeaway from Andy Flower’s dressing-room speech after Royal Challengers Bengaluru defended their IPL title with a five-wicket win over Gujarat Titans on Sunday.

Flower did not speak about statistics. He did not mention trophies, records or individual milestones. Instead, he focused on the people and qualities that helped RCB become only the third franchise in IPL history to win back-to-back titles.
Addressing Virat Kohli, Flower described the former captain as the “heartbeat” of the dressing room.
“Virat, I know you get a lot of attention and quite rightly, but I don’t want to downplay that because you are a heartbeat in this dressing room,” Flower said.
What stood out was the reason behind the praise. Flower was not celebrating Kohli’s runs or his Player of the Match-winning knock in the final. He was highlighting the courage and standards that Kohli brings to the group every single day.
“The courage that you continually show to go out there and put yourself on the line and take on high-quality opposition is a bloody great role model for all of us.”
Flower then turned his attention to Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood, the leaders of RCB’s bowling attack.
“Bhuvi, you and Hoff, the way that you’ve led the bowling unit with skill and smarts and huge heart to do what you do, to bowl at the death, to bowl in the powerplay when excellent cricketers are coming to take you on. I respect you guys tremendously for it.”
Taken together, those comments offer a glimpse into what RCB have built over the last two seasons. This is not a team dependent on one superstar. It is a team where senior players set standards, accept responsibility and create an environment in which everyone understands their role.
That is not always easy to achieve in franchise cricket.
The IPL is filled with star players and strong personalities. Mumbai Indians, for example, have assembled squads packed with elite talent in recent years. Yet even with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, success has not always followed. Talent alone does not guarantee results.
RCB recognised that reality during the mega auction. Their focus was not just on acquiring big names but on building a balanced squad with clearly defined roles. The management then backed those players, created stability and continuously looked for ways to improve.
The result is a team that appears united in purpose. There are stars, certainly, but there is also trust, accountability and clarity.
Those qualities do not show up on a scorecard. They do not feature in highlight reels either. Yet they are often the difference between a good team and a champion side.
Flower’s speech was a reminder of exactly that. Behind RCB’s second straight IPL title lies a culture built on courage, trust and leadership. And judging by the way the franchise is operating, that culture may prove to be its greatest strength in the years ahead.
